FIBA International Matches Live
Having been around for more than 75 years, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) is the main body responsible for organizing international basketball competitions. Most importantly, the World Championship, regional competitions and qualifiers for the Olympic Games are administered by the FIBA. Regional competitions such as the FIBA EuroBasket and FIBA Americas are serving the purpose of determining the best team of each continent every other year and to act as qualifiers for the World Championship. Typically, FIBA competitions are taking place over the summer to allow NBA players to represent their country. Although NBA teams have been reluctant to permit their players to compete in FIBA cups, large insurance contracts appear to have solved the issue to some extent.
There is no question about the increasing importance of international FIBA competitions over the past few years. Traditionally dominated by the United States, basketball around the globe has improved significantly over the past decade. Nowadays there are more than 50 international players competing in the NBA, some of them even became superstars like Pau Gasol and Dirk Nowitzki. Consequently, the level of play of many national teams has become much better as a side effect. For instance, countries like Spain and Argentina can already field a starting five solely consisting of NBA players. Likewise, FIBA competitions such as the World Championship are now playing a more essential role in the United States as well, partially because the American squad suffered a handful of humiliating losses in recent years.
