Sunday 27th March 23:00 - 01:30 GMT

While some might have thought that the Hawks were not in shape after a relatively poor performance in the off-season, Atlanta Hawks showed that they plan on competing for home-court advantage this year as they rallied to an impressive 119-104 win in Memphis to start the season. Thus, Joe Johnson and the Atlanta Hawks will play the Cleveland Cavaliers in their second road game on Tuesday at 11 p.m. GMT.

Albeit the Cavs posted an excellent 6-2 record in the preseason, many experts around the league reasoned that the team would fall apart in the regular season after LeBron James left the franchise from Ohio this summer. Yet, Cleveland got off to an amazing start as they defeated the defending Eastern Conference champions from Boston in a contested game on opening night. Even more remarkable is the fact that the Cavaliers played without starting point guard Mo Williams who was sidelined by a groin injury. Therefore, the Hawks should not underestimate the Cavs and might have to bring their A-game to steal one on the road on Tuesday night.

Where as the Cavs have already secured the number one overall seed in the East, the Atlanta Hawks are still in a head-to-head race with the Boston Celtics for the third place. Therefore, Joe Johnson and the Atlanta Hawks can be expected play with a lot of energy when they take on the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday at midnight GMT.

While there is no doubt the Cavs’ front-office is very content with the way LeBron James and company have played so far, the team will ultimately have to live up to the expectations of their fan base in the post-season. After all, Cleveland entered last year’s playoffs as number one overall seed as well, but fell to the Orlando Magic in the Conference Finals. That said, the addition of Anthony Parker, Antawn Jamison and Shaquille O’Neal improved the team by leaps and bounds and should provide them with much better 1-on-1 matchups versus other contenders. Needless to say that franchise cornerstone LeBron James is having yet another phenomenal year as he leads the Cavaliers with no less than 29.8 points, 8.6 assists, 7.2 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game.

The Hawks on the other hand improved quite a bit compared to 2008-09 and appear to be well on their way to a 50-win season. In fact, Atlanta is tied with the Boston Celtics for the third place in the Eastern Conference and is hoping to avoid a potential second-round match-up with the Cavs down the stretch. Especially the addition of Jamal Crawford paid dividends for the franchise from Georgia, as Crawford provides consistent scoring off the bench, averaging 17.7 points, 3.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds per contest. Taking everything into account, the Cavs are evidently the better overall team but should not underestimate the dynamic fast-break basketball Joe Johnson and company showcase night in and night out. Nonetheless, it remains to be seen whether Atlanta will have any answer for LeBron James who appears to be bound to cause mismatches.

Just two days after beating the Miami Heat in game seven of the first round, the Atlanta Hawks will have to travel to Cleveland to face the championship contenders on their home court. Although it is the first time in ten years that the Hawks make it out of the first round, there will not be much time for celebrations.

Cleveland on the other hand had one week off after sweeping the Detroit Pistons 4-0 in the first round. Thus, the team around LeBron James will take on the Atlanta Hawks well rested on Wednesday at 3 a.m. GMT. Apart from the fact that Cleveland seems to be the best team in the league along with the Lakers, they have proven to be the toughest team in the league at home. Out of their 41 regular season home games they only lost two, while being 2-0 at Quicken Loans Arena in the post-season thus far.

Until last year the Cavaliers were regarded a bunch of average players around the phenomenal LeBron James. But things have changed: James still is a MVP candidate with the potential of averaging numbers close to a triple-double, but the team defense as well as the ball rotation has increased drastically. Add Mo Williams to these facts and you have got an excellent team that is expected to make it all the way to the finals.

However, one should not take the Atlanta Hawks out of the equation before the series has even started. All-star Joe Johnson is one of the best shooting guards in the league while veteran guard Mike Bibby has the experience to get the ball into the right hands come crunch time. In contrast, their young but talented starters Marvin Williams and Josh Smith tend to be very streaky and might be wildcards against the Cavaliers. It remains to be seen if the Hawks can stay within striking distance throughout the game, but they certainly will fight until the last minute. After a comfortable 99-72 win in the series opener on Wednesday the Cleveland Cavaliers will host the Atlanta Hawks on Friday at 1 a.m. GMT for game two of the Eastern Conference semi-finals. Given the current shape of the Cavaliers, it seems like Atlanta will have to pray for a miracle to avoid going down 0-2.

One day after receiving the MVP award, LeBron James led Cleveland to a 27-point win over the Hawks in game one. Finishing the game with 34 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists King James demonstrated his versatility and importance for the Cavs. Mo Williams added 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting and led the scoring sheet behind James.

The Atlanta Hawks did a fairly good job of hanging around and keeping the Cavaliers’ lead in single digits until half-way through the third quarter. However, Cleveland started pulling away as the game went on while Atlanta could not put up more than 11 points in the last quarter.

Without any doubts, one key to Cleveland’s success was their terrific team defense throughout the game. Thus, Atlanta’s all-star shooting guard Joe Johnson was held to 11 points by the Cavaliers’ defensive efforts which practically eliminated any Hawks’ ambitions for a win in Cleveland.

Considering the energy level of the Cavs in game one and the fact that they only lost two games at home the entire season, it remains questionable how the Hawks might be able to steal a game in Cleveland in game two. Unless LeBron James has an off-night and Joe Johnson pulls off one of the best playoff games in his career there is very little hope for Atlanta to leave the court with a win. Nonetheless, the Hawks can be expected to give their best and try to avoid another 20+ blow-out in game two on Friday.
