In contrast, the Celtics can finally count on a healthy squad and are confidently entering their encounter with the Cavs, hoping to make another championship run after winning it all in 2008. Especially point guard Rajon Rondo has been phenomenal in the first round, averaging 14.8 points, 10.2 assists, 6.2 rebounds and 2.4 steals per contest. Likewise, Boston's defense has been playing exceptionally well, holding the Miami Heat to just 87 points per game. Taking said circumstances into account, the Cavaliers might have a slight edge over the Celtics, yet, the team around LeBron James will have to bring their A-game to avoid a home loss on Tuesday night. After all, Boston has shown in the past that they are as good as anyone in the league when the game is on the line and can close out contested games.

After LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers were eliminated by the Magic in the Eastern Conference finals last year, many questioned whether the roster around LeBron James is good enough to ever win a championship. Thus, GM Danny Ferry brought in some new faces over the summer to ensure that the Cavs stay competitive in 2009-10. In their first game of the season, the Cleveland Cavaliers will host the Boston Bruins at Quicken Loans Arena on Tuesday at 11:30 p.m. GMT.

 

 

Similarly, the Boston Celtics also failed to reach their goal of winning another championship ring in 2008-09. However, the Celtics’ front office reasoned that their Conference semi-finals exit was mainly due to the absence of franchise centerpiece Kevin Garnett. Nonetheless, GM Danny Ainge decided to tweak Boston’s roster a bit during the off-season. More specifically, the Celtics signed veteran center Rasheed Wallace and swingman Marquis Daniels. Given the fact that the Celtics had an impressive 6-1 preseason run, it certainly looks like the aforementioned additions blend in well with the existing core.

 

The Cavaliers on the other hand were facing a lot of pressure to make a major move during the off-season since LeBron James could still sign somewhere else next year. Assuming that the multiple NBA All-Star wants to play for a contender, the Cavs might see their championship window closing next summer if they do not deliver in 2009-10. Either way, General Manager Danny Ferry managed to pull off a trade that landed Shaquille O’Neal in Ohio while giving up little more than expiring contracts. Moreover, Cleveland acquired former slam dunk contestant Jamario Moon and off-guard Anthony Parker from the Toronto Raptors.

 

 

Taking everything into consideration, both teams can be expected to establish themselves at the top of the Eastern Conference this year. Yet, whether the Celtics or Cavaliers will come away with a win in their season opener appears to be a tough call. The acquisition of Rasheed Wallace will allow Boston to spread the floor which could benefit the drives of Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo. In contrast, the Cavs have a very potent center duo in O’Neal and Ilgauskas, possibly a little too much to handle for Kendrick Perkins and Rasheed Wallace. Either way, the audience can expect an exciting game between two championship contenders who will open the 2009-10 NBA season on Tuesday night.
