Wednesday 1st December 00:00 - 02:30 GMT

Although many basketball analysts expected the Cavs to spend this year at the bottom of the league after the departure of reigning MVP LeBron James, the team around Mo Williams did a great job of playing unselfish, team-oriented basketball so far and is right in the playoff mix in the East. Thus, the Cleveland Cavaliers will try to climb to a 7-8 record when they take on Paul Pierce and the Boston Celtics on Wednesday at midnight GMT.

Considering that the Celtics already experienced several injuries early in the season, head coach Doc Rivers is certainly happy with the way things have been going in the first month of action. More specifically, Boston leads the Eastern Conference with 11 wins in 15 games and appears to be ready to compete for a championship in this year’s NBA campaign. Much like last year, the Celtics’ lock-down defense has been the key to success for Rajon Rondo and company as they held opposing teams to just 92 points a game. Likewise, Shaquille O’Neal showed that he is not done yet and put up 11.9 points and 6.8 rebounds in just 22 minutes per contest. Therefore, it looks like the Cavs might have a tough time avoiding their fifth home loss of the season when they face the Celtics on Wednesday night.

Given the fact that the LeBron James left the Cavs this summer, the franchise from Ohio will inevitably have to lower its expectations this year. After all, the team around Mo Williams has little more than a group of role players and secondary options to count on which will make things difficult in the Eastern Conference in 2010-11. Nonetheless, the Cleveland Cavaliers will try to avoid an early setback when they face Rajon Rondo and the Boston Celtics on Wednesday at 11 p.m. GMT.

The Celtics on the other hand are highly motivated to compete for a championship title in this year's NBA campaign as they further strengthened their team that made it to the finals in 2009-10. More precisely, former All-Stars Shaquille O'Neal and Jermaine O'Neal joined Boston's crowded front-court and helped the squad of coach Doc Rivers to post an impressive 7-1 record in the preseason. Therefore, there seems to be no doubt that Rajon Rondo and company will enter their encounter with the Cavs as favorites to start the season with a win on the road on Wednesday.

Considering that the Boston Celtics entered the post-season just as fourth seed in the Eastern Conference, the team around All-Star forward Paul Pierce is fairly content to be still in the race for an appearance in the Conference Finals. Thus, the Boston Celtics will try to take the series lead when they face LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday at midnight GMT.

Even though many experts around the league thought that the Celtics would feed off the confidence they gained with their clutch road win in game two, the franchise from Massachusetts subsequently experienced a disappointing 124-95 home loss. Most importantly, coach Doc Rivers' squad failed to perform at the defensive end of the floor as they allowed the Cavs to shoot nearly 60% from the floor. Especially franchise centerpiece Paul Pierce struggled significantly, recording just 11 points on 4-of-15 shooting.

In contrast, the Cavaliers successfully bounced back after an unexpected loss in game two and are now hoping to close out the series at home. Obviously, Cleveland will need another strong performance from All-Star LeBron James who averages no less than 32.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7.4 assists, 2.2 blocks and 1.6 steals per contest. Likewise, trade deadline acquisition Antawn Jamison has provided the Cavs with even more scoring, putting up 17.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Taking everything into account, it looks like the Cavaliers might have an advantage over the Celtics on Wednesday night, after all, LeBron James and company have been playing better basketball all year long. Nonetheless, Cleveland will have to play up to their full potential and bring some defensive intensity to the floor to prevent Boston from getting back into the series.

Even though the Celtics' did not play as well as they were hoping for in the regular season, the team around All-Star forward Paul Pierce had very little trouble in the first playoff around as they rallied to a 4-1 series win versus Dwayne Wade and the Miami Heat. Thus, the Boston Celtics will travel to Cleveland to take on LeBron James and the Cavaliers on Tuesday at midnight GMT.

Much like Boston, the Cavs did not have any problems in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals either, beating the Chicago Bulls in just five games. That said, it should be noted that most of their wins over the Bulls were highly contested and required a lot of energy. Even more importantly, franchise cornerstone LeBron James suffered a minor elbow injury which could become a major factor down the stretch.

In contrast, the Celtics can finally count on a healthy squad and are confidently entering their encounter with the Cavs, hoping to make another championship run after winning it all in 2008. Especially point guard Rajon Rondo has been phenomenal in the first round, averaging 14.8 points, 10.2 assists, 6.2 rebounds and 2.4 steals per contest. Likewise, Boston's defense has been playing exceptionally well, holding the Miami Heat to just 87 points per game. Taking said circumstances into account, the Cavaliers might have a slight edge over the Celtics, yet, the team around LeBron James will have to bring their A-game to avoid a home loss on Tuesday night. After all, Boston has shown in the past that they are as good as anyone in the league when the game is on the line and can close out contested games.

After LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers were eliminated by the Magic in the Eastern Conference finals last year, many questioned whether the roster around LeBron James is good enough to ever win a championship. Thus, GM Danny Ferry brought in some new faces over the summer to ensure that the Cavs stay competitive in 2009-10. In their first game of the season, the Cleveland Cavaliers will host the Boston Bruins at Quicken Loans Arena on Tuesday at 11:30 p.m. GMT.

Similarly, the Boston Celtics also failed to reach their goal of winning another championship ring in 2008-09. However, the Celtics’ front office reasoned that their Conference semi-finals exit was mainly due to the absence of franchise centerpiece Kevin Garnett. Nonetheless, GM Danny Ainge decided to tweak Boston’s roster a bit during the off-season. More specifically, the Celtics signed veteran center Rasheed Wallace and swingman Marquis Daniels. Given the fact that the Celtics had an impressive 6-1 preseason run, it certainly looks like the aforementioned additions blend in well with the existing core.

The Cavaliers on the other hand were facing a lot of pressure to make a major move during the off-season since LeBron James could still sign somewhere else next year. Assuming that the multiple NBA All-Star wants to play for a contender, the Cavs might see their championship window closing next summer if they do not deliver in 2009-10. Either way, General Manager Danny Ferry managed to pull off a trade that landed Shaquille O’Neal in Ohio while giving up little more than expiring contracts. Moreover, Cleveland acquired former slam dunk contestant Jamario Moon and off-guard Anthony Parker from the Toronto Raptors.

Taking everything into consideration, both teams can be expected to establish themselves at the top of the Eastern Conference this year. Yet, whether the Celtics or Cavaliers will come away with a win in their season opener appears to be a tough call. The acquisition of Rasheed Wallace will allow Boston to spread the floor which could benefit the drives of Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo. In contrast, the Cavs have a very potent center duo in O’Neal and Ilgauskas, possibly a little too much to handle for Kendrick Perkins and Rasheed Wallace. Either way, the audience can expect an exciting game between two championship contenders who will open the 2009-10 NBA season on Tuesday night.
