Given the fact that the Celtics and Lakers met in the NBA Finals in 2008 and 2010, there is no doubt that both teams are highly motivated to show everyone who the best franchise is this year. Meeting for the first time in the regular season, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers will head to Massachusetts to play the Boston Celtics at TD Garden on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. GMT.
Even though the Lakers are trailing the Spurs by no less than six games after four months of play, coach Phil Jackson is confident that his squad will be in shape come post-season time. That said, one has concede that it was not so much the Lakers underperforming, but San Antonio playing great basketball up to this point. Nonetheless, Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol remain one of the best duos to lead a franchise, combining for 43.5 points, 15.5 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game. Thus, fans around the league can expect a hard-nosed battle between arguably the best two teams in the league when Paul Pierce and company are at Staples Center on Sunday evening.

Considering that hardly anyone expected the team around All-Star Paul Pierce to overcome the Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic, it is certainly a surprise that the Celtics could very well win it all this week. Leading the series 3-2, Kevin Garnett and the Boston Celtics will travel to California to take on the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center on Wednesday at 1 a.m. GMT.
In contrast, the Lakers are somewhat frustrated after losing two straight in game four and five and will have to play much better basketball in order to avoid elimination on Wednesday night. Most importantly, center Andrew Bynum will have to become more dominant at both ends of the floor as he recorded just six points and one rebound on Sunday. Like in the past, Kobe Bryant has been carrying Phil Jackson's squad throughout the Finals, averaging no less than 30.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.0 steals per contest. However, the Lakers' supporting cast left much to be desired and was not able to support Bryant the way the franchise was hoping for. Especially Ron Artest and Lamar Odom failed to deliver as they put up just 7.8 and 7.6 points per game respectively.
The Celtics on the other hand have hardly anything to complain about, after all, they are just one game away from clinching another NBA title after their success in 2008. Most importantly, the Celtics' defense has been spectacular all series long, effectively shutting down the Lakers' offense apart from Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol. Likewise, Rajon Rondo continued to elevate his play and turned out to be an essential part of Boston's excellent performance thus far as he averaged 16.1 points, 9.4 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. Taking everything into account, the Celtics have been playing slightly better in the series so far, yet the Lakers should under no circumstances be underestimated. Above all, Los Angeles will benefit from the support of their home crowd at Staples Center and can count on Kobe Bryant to take over close games and perform in crunch time.

Albeit the Celtics did not live up to the expectations of their fan base during the regular season, Paul Pierce and company played some excellent basketball in the playoffs and made it all the way to the NBA Finals. Thus, the Boston Celtics will take on Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center on Friday at 1 a.m. GMT.
Considering that the Lakers are about to make their third straight NBA Finals appearance, there is no doubt that the franchise’s off-season acquisitions paid dividends. More precisely, Ron Artest provided Los Angeles with an excellent defensive option on the wings all year long, even though it should be mentioned that his offensive play left much to be desired at times. Likewise, Phil Jackson’s triangle offense continued to make life difficult for their opponents and helped them to clinch a 4-2 series win over Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference Finals.
Similarly, the Celtics showed that their veteran squad can still compete with anyone in the league as they not only eliminated LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, but subsequently dominated the Orlando Magic in the Conference Finals. Especially the fact that Kevin Garnett is healthy has been a crucial factor in Boston’s playoff run as he remains one of the best two-way players in the entire league. Moreover, point guard Rajon Rondo had a great year and made some big plays in the post-season, putting up 16.7 points, 10.0 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals per contest. Taking everything into account, fans around the globe can expect a hard-nosed battle between two fairly even teams on Friday night. Although the Lakers might get a lift from the support of their home crowd, it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to get past the Celtics’ tough defense.

Without any doubts, the Boston Celtics front-office was hoping for much more than a disappointing fourth place in the Eastern Conference before the All-Star break. Thus, Paul Pierce and the Boston Celtics will try to bounce back when they make their way to Los Angeles Lakers to face the Lakers at Staples Center on Friday at 3:30 a.m. GMT.
Unlike the Celtics, the Lakers are very content with their performance so far as they lead the Western Conference with an impressive 41-13 record. Most importantly, they managed to dominate the league despite Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant missing a bunch of games due to nagging injuries. In fact, the Lakers managed to clinch back-to-back victories versus the Blazers and Jazz last week with Kobe Bryant out of the picture. Especially the acquisition of hard-nosed forward Ron Artest paid tremendous dividends as he fits well into Phil Jackson triangle offense and has proven to be an excellent perimeter defender.
Boston on the other hand has won just five of their last ten games and is not playing nearly as well as most experts anticipated. Albeit Kevin Garnett was sidelined with a knee injury early in the season, it looks like the Celtics aging roster might not be able to make another championship run. That said, point guard Rajon Rondo continued to elevate his game and made his first All-Star appearance last weekend. In 49 appearances, Rondo put up 14.3 points, 9.7 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 2.5 steals per contest while shooting 53% from the floor. Taking everything into account, the Lakers appear to be the slightly better team and should be able to come away with a win at Staples Center if the play up to their potential. Nonetheless, the Celtics are not to be underestimated, after all they are solid veteran team and have shown that they are not afraid to make clutch shots in crunchtime.
