Even though the Cavs got off to a slower start than expected, the team around LeBron James evidently got their act together and rallied to the second place in the Eastern Conference. Hoping to keep their winning streak alive, the Cavaliers will travel to California to take on Tyreke Evans and the Sacramento Kings on Thursday at 3 a.m. GMT.
Before the 2009-10 season got underway nearly everyone though that the Kings were bound to spend another year at the bottom of the league. After all, Sacramento finished last year’s NBA campaign with an awful 17-65 record and subsequently decided to blow up their team and start rebuilding. Things looked even worse for the struggling franchise when they fell all the way to the fourth overall pick on lottery night despite having the worst record in the NBA. However, rookie Tyreke Evans turned out to be just as good as the players picked ahead of him and led the Kings to a surprisingly decent start. More precisely, the Kings won 12 out of 26 so far and are still in the playoff race. Offensively, Evans led all scores with 20.0 points, 5.1 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 36 minutes per contest.
The Cleveland Cavaliers on the other hand had much higher goals in mind when they added future Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal during the off-season as well as acquiring Anthony Parker and Jamario Moon. That said, the Cavs did not perform particularly well in the opening weeks but bounced back by winning 8 out of 10 over the last three weeks. Like in past years, Cleveland played excellent team defense and held their opponents to just 94 points per game. At the other end of the floor, Mike Brown’s squad relied to a large extent on LeBron ‘King’ James to score and find the open teammate for easy buckets. So far, reigning MVP James put up 28.8 points, 8.0 assists, 7.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals per contest. Taking the aforementioned circumstances into consideration, it looks like the Kings might have a hard time competing with the Cavs despite playing on their home court. More likely than not, Sacramento’s young squad will experience considerable problems versus Cleveland’s efficient defense and struggle containing LeBron James down the stretch.
