Dallas Mavericks v New Orleans Hornets Live
While the Hornets dropped six of their last ten games, they are still in the race for home-court advantage, trailing the fourth seeded Oklahoma City Thunder by just two games. Thus, Chris Paul and the New Orleans Hornets are confident to secure a victory at home when they host the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday at 1 a.m. GMT.
Even though the Mavs are coming off a buzzer-beater loss versus the Grizzlies, the team around Dirk Nowitzki has been playing excellent basketball over the last two months. More precisely, Dallas won 18 of its last 20 games and is holding on to the second playoff spot in the competitive Western Conference. One bright spot going forward is Rodrigue Beaubois who just recovered from a broken foot and has been averaging 9.1 points and 2.4 assists despite playing just 16 minutes per contest. Similarly, franchise centerpiece Dirk Nowitzki is averaging career-highs in field goal and three point percentage and was finally able to play less minutes due to the outstanding overall depth of the Mavericks’ roster. Therefore, Dallas can rightfully be regarded everyone’s favorites to clinch another road win when they meet the Hornets on Thursday night.

Without any doubts, the New Orleans Hornets failed to live up to the expectations of their fan base in the first week of play. Hoping to bounce back from a 10-point loss versus the Celtics, Chris Paul will do his best to carry the Hornets to a win versus the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.
Even though the Dallas Mavericks did not manage to win their home opener versus Gilbert Arenas and the Wizards, the team around Dirk Nowitzki was able to clinch two big wins during their road trip to Los Angeles. More specifically, the Mavs upset the Lakers on Friday night with a 94-80 win at Staples Center before overcoming the Clippers one day later. Albeit Rick Carlisle’s squad is still missing Josh Howard, Dallas performed surprisingly well at the defensive end of the floor. Especially Shawn Marion made a huge impact due to his defensive energy and ability to get on the offensive glass. In the first three games, Shawn ‘The Matrix’ Marion averaged 16.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per contest. Needless to say that franchise centerpiece Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavs’ offense, scoring 26.7 points and pulling down 9.3 boards.
The New Orleans Hornets on the other hand are under a lot of pressure to get their act together as they lost two out of three so far. Although Emeka Okafor seemed to fit well into the team, the Hornets do not appear to have the necessary talent to make it to the upper echelon of the competitive Western Conference. Most importantly, New Orleans’ interior defense seemed to collapse whenever Okafor needed some rest on the bench. Moreover, apart from Chris Paul and David West the Hornets lacked any consistent production offensively, even though Peja Stojakovic provided some scoring off the bench. Taking everything into consideration, New Orleans might have a tough night ahead of them when they meet the Mavericks on Thursday. That said, the Hornets only hope is to exploit the mismatch between Chris Paul and Jason Kidd. Although Kidd is still an excellent player, there is no way that he will be able to stay in front of CP3. One possibility for Rick Carlisle would be to start JJ Barea instead of Quinton Ross in the backcourt, putting Barea on Paul while Kidd would deal with Mo Peterson. However, it remains to be seen whether the Hornets find a way to contain Dallas’ dynamic forward Duo Shawn Marion and Dirk Nowitzki. Ultimately, the Hornets will need a stellar night from Chris Paul and David West to stay within striking distance throughout the game.
