Taking into consideration that the Mavs could very well face the Blazers in the first round of the playoffs, Dallas’ fans will certainly pay particular attention to their team’s encounter with Portland on Sunday. Especially the match-up between Dirk Nowitzki and LaMarcus Aldrige should be an interesting one, although coach Rick Carlisle’s might assign Shawn Marion or Tyson Chandler to Aldrige while putting Nowitzki on Marcus Camby. Either way, the Mavericks will try to showcase the same defensive intensity that carried them to four consecutive wins and limit the Blazers’ offensive flow. Therefore, Dallas might have a slight advantage over the shorthanded Trail Blazers.

Even though the Mavs pulled off an impressive 13-0 run after the All-Star break, the team around Jason Kidd slowed down considerably over the past few weeks. Thus, the Dallas Mavericks will try to get back on track when they take on Brandon Roy and the Portland Trail Blazers at Rose Garden on Saturday at 2 a.m. GMT.

In contrast, the Trail Blazers' front-office is fairly content since Brandon Roy and company managed to secure a playoff spot despite a series of unfortunate injuries. More specifically, the franchise from Oregon lost Joel Przybilla and Greg Oden due to long-term injuries and suddenly found itself without any legitimate center. Fortunately, the Blazers were able to acquire veteran Marcus Camby from the Los Angeles Clippers right before the trade deadline to address the issue. Currently holding on to the seventh place in the Western Conference with a 47-30 record, Portland is hoping to climb to the sixth or seventh spot in the remaining week of play to avoid a first-round match-up with Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers down the stretch.

The Mavs on the other hand can count on one of the deepest rosters in the league and put themselves in an even better position by acquiring Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood from the Washington Wizards half-way through the season. Still in the race for the second place in the West, Dallas is under significant pressure to perform well in the remaining four games and secure home-court advantage for the post-season. Leading the franchise from Northern Texas once again is power forward Dirk Nowitzki who put up 24.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists per contest. Taking said circumstances into consideration, the Mavs might have a slight advantage over the Blazers but will have to play up to their full potential to steal one on the road on Saturday night. After all, Portland has shown countless times that they are one of the tougher defensive teams in the league and can make life difficult for their opponents at home.

After an impressive 13-1 run following the All-Star break, the Mavs slowed down a bit last week as they dropped two of their last three games. Hoping to get back on track, Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks will head to Oregon to take on the Portland Trail Blazers at Rose Garden on Friday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.

Where as the Dallas Mavericks are still in the run in the race for the second playoff seed in the Western Conference, the Portland Trail Blazers are just hanging on to the eight place. That said, it should be mentioned that Portland experienced a range of injury problems and could be a tough first-round playoff match-up if either Greg Oden or Joel Pryzbilla return to the floor within the next month. Leading the franchise from Portland once again, All-Star Brandon Roy averages no less than 22.2 points, 4.7 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.1 steals per contest.

The Mavs on the other hand are still hoping to make a run for a championship ring and could very well be capable to give the Lakers a run for their money down stretch. After pulling the trigger on a blockbuster trade that sent Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood to Texas, the team around multiple All-Star Dirk Nowitzki improved by leaps and bounds and posted an outstanding 14-3 record. Being tied with the Denver Nuggets for the second place in the Western Conference, the Mavs will have to keep up their high level of play to put themselves in a good position come post-season play. Taking everything into account, the Mavericks appear to have a slight edge over the Blazers but will have to find a way to contain Brandon Roy on Friday night. Likewise, Dallas' head coach Rick Carlisle will most likely try to take advantage of favorable match-ups in the low-post area.
