While there was a heated debate about the current state of the Chicago Bulls, it looks like their hard-nosed battle with the Celtics in the first round of the 2008-09 playoffs was no fluke. Eyeballing their fifth win in 2009-10, Derrick Rose and the Bulls will host the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday at 1 a.m. GMT.

Even though the Denver Nuggets got off to a great season start with five straight victories, George Karl’s squad slowed down a bit as they lost two in a row versus the Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks. Nonetheless, the Nuggets’ front-office is very content with the success early in 2009-10, especially if one takes into account that Denver had to play without the suspended J.R. Smith. Putting up 109 points per contest, the Nuggets’ offense has been on fire so far, albeit they experienced some problems defensively as they allowed their opponents to score 104. Most importantly, Carmello Anthony continued to elevate his game and averaged 31.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

Similarly, the Bulls came out of the gates ready to play and are holding on to a solid 4-2 record. Although some might have had their doubts about not signing a replacement for Ben Gordon, Chicago certainly looked like a team bound for a post-season appearance thus far. In fact, the Bulls already managed to defeat the San Antonio Spurs and Cleveland Cavaliers as they showed exceptional team defense and were able to score in crunch-time. More specifically, Vinny del Negro’s squad held their opponents to just 88 points a game and fed off their defensive stops to jumpstart their offense. Likewise, the return of Luol Deng was crucial for Chicago’s front-court since Deng immediately made an impact averaging 16.7 points and 10.0 rebounds per contest. Considering said circumstances, it looks like both teams are on a similar level of play and will most likely engage in a hard-nosed battle at United Center on Wednesday night. Even though Denver might have more individual talent on their roster, Derrick Rose and the Bulls have shown that they are able to compete with the best in the league. Ultimately, it might come down to whether Chicago manages to contain Denver’s explosive offense around Carmello Anthony in order to avoid dropping one at home.
