Coming off a tough home loss in game three, the Denver Nuggets showed a terrific performance in game four which resulted in a 19-point home win to even the series. Throughout the game it seemed like the Lakers were lacking the energy that helped them so far in the series. Denver on the other hand came out of the locker room ready to compete and took control of the game right after the tip-off. In fact, the Lakers were trailing the entire game unable to find a way to stop Denver’s offense.

All-Star Chauncey Billups led the Nuggets with 24 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists while J.R. Smith provided a huge lift off the bench finishing the game with 24 points and 4 assists. Kenyon Martin and Nene both had a double-double helping the Nuggets to out-rebound the Lakers by nearly 20 boards. In contrast, the Lakers could not find any productivity on the offensive end of the floor apart from Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol. Bryant led all scores with 34 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists but was only 10-of-26 from the field.

Considering the Lakers’ poor effort in game four, they will have to play significantly better basketball on their home-court to make it to the NBA Finals. More specifically, they cannot let the Nuggets dominate the boards on both ends off the floor. Denver had 20 offensive rebounds in their last encounter which led to numerous second chance points. Likewise, the Lakers will have to focus on playing defense to limit the Nuggets offensive options. The main concern for Phil Jackson’s team right now has to be the fact that Denver was able to put up 120 points in game four despite Carmello Anthony having a relatively quiet night.

Although the Nuggets were the better team throughout most of game one, the only thing that will be remembered is a 105-103 home win for the Los Angeles Lakers. Thus, the Lakers will host Denver for their second home game of the Western Conference Finals on Friday at 2 a.m. GMT.

Coming out of the locker room ready to continue their post-season success the Denver Nuggets had a very strong first quarter in game one that resulted in an early 31-23 lead. Although the Lakers came back as the game went on, they seemed out of synch and were still trailing late in the fourth. However, All-Star Kobe Bryant showed once again that he can step up and carry his team single handedly.  Los Angeles tied the game with 30 seconds remaining in regulation and Bryant subsequently converted six free throws to give the Lakers an important two point win in the series opener. Kobe finished the game with 40 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists while most of his teammates were struggling. Only Paul Gasol was able to put together a decent performance with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

The Nuggets on the other hand played with a lot of defensive energy forcing turnovers and hustling for every ball. Carmello Anthony led Denver with 39 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists while point guard Chauncey Billups had 18 points and 8 assists.

Losing a game with such great effort, Nuggets’ coach George Karl will face a tough challenge motivating his team for game two. Moreover, J.R. Smith will be a game-time decision after hyper-extending his knee during the last seconds of game one. Likewise, the fact that they almost managed to beat the Lakers despite Kobe’s 40-point performance suggests that this Western Conference Finals series may turn into a longer battle. In contrast, Los Angeles will have to find a way move the ball better and create more open looks. Although Kobe saved the Lakers in game one, they cannot rely on him alone to advance to the finals.

Before the post-season started, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers were every expert’s favorite to make it out of the Western Conference to the NBA finals. However, after two rounds of playoff action predictions do not appear to be so easy anymore.

Over the past few weeks the audience saw a fantastic Nuggets team steamrolling through the first two rounds, possibly playing the best basketball ever in franchise history. More specifically, it took them only five games each to beat the New Orleans Hornets and Dallas Mavericks 4-1. Chauncey ‘Mr Bigshot’ Billups had a terrific post-season running Denver’s offense so far and there is no doubt that his leadership is much needed by the young Nuggets team.

The Lakers on the other hand won their first round series versus the struggling Utah Jazz fairly easy in five games before taking on the Houston Rockets in the Conference semi-finals. Given the fact that Yao Ming was out for the season after an injury in game three, many were left wondering why the Lakers had such problems overcoming the Rockets. Houston forced L.A. all the way to game seven despite having to play without their two best players Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming.

Thus, looking forward to the Western Conference finals it seems like two fairly even teams will meet each other in an exciting playoff series. There is no question about Kobe Bryant’s ability to take over any game, but the Nuggets’ scoring is distributed much more evenly. Similarly, Denver’s bench has been outstanding throughout the season, repeatedly giving them a huge lift. It will be interesting to see what different looks George Karl throw at Kobe, but a match-up between All-Stars Carmello Anthony and Kobe Bryant should be very entertaining for the crowd.
