Considering the Spurs’ offensive dominance in the first three months of regular season play, Denver will most likely have to increase its defensive pressure to avoid a loss in San Antonio on Monday night.

Whereas the Nuggets primary concern remains the future of franchise centerpiece Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups and company showcased some solid basketball on the court, as they managed to win 16 out 26 games so far. Looking to secure another win, the Denver Nuggets will travel to Texas where they will meet Manu Ginobili and the San Antonio Spurs at 1:30 a.m. GMT.

Given the fact that San Antonio struggled to even make it to the post-season last year, their dominant performance in the first two months of regular season action has certainly been a bit surprising. More precisely, the Spurs posted an amazing 23-3 record to start the 2010-11 season and have been looking like a completely different team. Most importantly, coach Greg Popovich can finally enjoy the benefits of a healthy squad as the veteran team around Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker rallied to the first place in the Western Conference. Therefore, anything else than a convincing home win by the Spurs would be a huge surprise when the game between Denver and San Antonio gets underway on Thursday.

Albeit the San Antonio Spurs did not get off to a good start into this year’s NBA campaign, the team around Tim Duncan quickly made it back to the upper echelon of the Western Conference with five straight wins over the last two weeks. Thus, Tony Parker and company will host the Denver Nuggets at AT&T Center on Sunday at 1:30 a.m. GMT.

Without any doubts, the Nuggets are very content with their performance in the opening month of play. More specifically, George Karl’s squad posted a 12-5 record and is currently holding on to the fourth place in the competitive Western Conference. Likewise, the Nuggets’ front-office made two great steals with their two late first round draft picks this summer. In fact, Ty Lawson and Arron Afflalo both turned out to be immediate contributors and gave Denver a huge lift off the bench. At times, Lawson looked like he could be the Nuggets’ point guard of the future as he averaged 8.7 points, 3.5 assists and 1.9 rebounds in just 21 minutes per contest. Similarly, All-Star Carmello Anthony assumed more responsibility and carried the team while putting up a career numbers at 31.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.3 steals per game.

The Spurs on the other hand struggled a bit in the first two weeks of play but subsequently bounced back with five straight wins. After all, the franchise did make some substantial changes during the off-season and also had to insert the previously injured Manu Ginobili into their rotation. Unlike in the past, Gregg Popovich will not have to rely entirely on Duncan, Paker and Ginobili to win games down the stretch. With Jefferson, Hill, McDyess and Blair on board, San Antonio has significantly more scoring options which will most likely cause a wide range of problems for other teams as the season goes on. Likewise, the Spurs’ team defense is a tough obstacle to overcome as they held their opponents to just 96 points per contest. Taking everything into account, it looks like the encounter between the Spurs and Nuggets is still anyone’s game as both teams are on a fairly similar level of play. Both have shown that they can compete at either end of the floor and will be looking for a win on Sundday.
