Sitting right at the .500 mark, the Detroit Pistons are hoping to avoid another mediocre year after posting an unsatisfying 39-43 record in 2008-09. About to face another tough challenge, Ben Gordon and the Pistons will travel to Los Angeles Lakers where they will take on the Lakers on Wednesday at 3:30 a.m. GMT.

Unlike the Pistons, the Lakers’ front-office is very pleased with the way Kobe Bryant and company started into the season. In fact, L.A. managed to win eight out of nine so far, only dropping one game versus the Dallas Mavericks at home. Considering that multiple All-Star Pau Gasol has not played a single game yet and center Andrew Bynum missed two, one can only imagine what the Lakers will be capable of once everyone is healthy. Likewise, Ron Artest appears to accept his role behind Kobe Bryant as his shot selection has been fairly reasonable in the first two weeks of play. Moreover, Artest is an extremely valuable asset at the other end of the floor since he has proven to be one of the best wing defenders in the league.

The Detroit Pistons on the other hand had their moments, but failed to bring the same effort night in and night out. Given the fact that the Pistons’ schedule has been fairly easy thus far, Rip Hamilton and company will most likely have to improve significantly in order to stay in the playoff race down the stretch. Albeit Detroit stole a game versus the almighty Orlando Magic, they also experienced some humiliating losses versus the Oklahoma City Thunder, Milwaukee Bucks and Toronto Raptors. That said, it should be noted that Rip Hamilton only appeared in one game due to an ankle injury while Tayshaun Prince is currently sidelined with back problems that might require surgery. While the aforementioned issues might be valid excuses for Detroit’s performance, it will not change the fact that anything else than a victory for the Lakers would be a huge surprise. In terms of ball movement, individual talent, defensive intensity and team-play, Phil Jackson squad is simply too far ahead of the Pistons who are still trying to get everyone on the same page.
