Detroit Pistons v Orlando Magic Live
After winning four straight in the first week of play, the Magic dropped their first game of the season in their encounter with Detroit Pistons on Tuesday. Thus, Stan van Gundy’s squad is hoping to bounce back in their second game versus Rip Hamilton and the Pistons on Saturday at midnight a.m. GMT.
Obviously the Magic were not expected to continue shooting the three-ball at 55%, yet their drop off from beyond the arc cannot fully account for the surprising loss versus Detroit. More specifically, Dwight Howard and Marcin Gortat both got into foul trouble early in the match and prevented Orlando from playing their typical inside-out game. Ultimately, Howard only played 17 minutes throughout the game before fouling out. Similarly, Vince Carter still seemed to be banged up and settled for jumpshots instead of slashing to the hoop.
In contrast, the Pistons climbed back to the .500 mark with their win over the Magic and are hoping to make a run early in the season. Experiencing some ups and down in the first week of action, Detroit is still struggling to find a working rotation addressing their log-jam at the 2-guard position with Rip Hamilton and Ben Gordon. However, Hamilton might be out with a minor injury suffered in practice, providing plenty of minutes for Gordon. One positive aspect for the franchise from Michigan has been the exceptional performance at the defensive end of the floor. In fact, the Pistons rank among the best in the league defensively, holding their opponents to 85 points a game.
Taking everything into account, the Magic will enter the match-up with the Pistons as favorites to secure a win on Saturday night at Amway Arena. Albeit the Pistons did come away with a win last week, they still lack the depth of talent Orlando has on its roster. Moreover, it is not very likely that Stan van Gundy sharp-shooters will have another off-night when the two teams meet again. Ultimately, the Pistons’ only chance to steal one on the road will be to prevent Dwight Howard from taking over and dominating the paint. That said, Detroit will have to attack the basket, draw fouls and continue to get to the line in order to compete with the Magic.
