Without any doubts, Amar Stoudemire and company surprised many fans around the league with their strong performance in the first three weeks of play. Leading the Western Conference with ten wins in twelve games, the Suns will take on the Detroit Pistons at US Airways Center on Monday at 1 a.m. GMT.

In contrast, the Detroit Pistons came slow out of the gates as they posted a mediocre 5-6 record, including two straight losses versus the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers. That said, it should be mentioned that the franchise from Michigan underwent some changes over the summer and is still without the injured Rip Hamilton. Most importantly, the Pistons were unable to benefit from their great defense due to their inability to find the basket consistently. In fact, the Pistons only average 93 points per game which might be too little down the stretch. Even though there is no doubt that the absence of Rip Hamilton is a big loss for Detroit, it remains to be seen what will happen once Hamilton returns to the floor. Most likely, the Pistons will find themselves with a similar logjam at the two-guard position as last year. Thus, it is not beyond the realms of reality that GM Joe Dumars might consider trading Hamilton since starting shooting guard Gordon was just signed to a costly 5-year contract this summer.

The Phoenix Suns on the other hand miraculously managed to cut their payroll during the off-season and become a better team at the same time. Unlike Shaquille O’Neal pointed out in July, these two goals do not seem to be mutually exclusive. More specifically, the Suns showcased exciting up-tempo basketball in the first three weeks of play and rallied to an impressive 10-2 record to start the season. While franchise cornerstones Steve Nash and Amar’e Stoudemire played up to their potential, Channing Frye and Grant Hill stepped up to help Phoenix on their way to the top of the Western Conference. Putting up 110 points per contest, Steve Nash and company have shown that stopping their high octane offense is easier said than done. In conclusion, it appears to be a justified assumption that the defensive minded Pistons will have a tough time containing the explosive Suns at the defensive end of the floor. Albeit Phoenix might not score as much as on other nights, they should be able to overcome the struggling Pistons at US Airways Center.
