Needless to say that franchise centerpiece Dirk Nowitzki is once again among the best scorers in the league, putting up 27.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.5 blocks per game. Taking everything into account, it looks like Dallas will enter their encounter with the Rockets as favorites to clinch a victory at American Airlines Center. Ultimately, the Mavs are the better team at both ends of the floor and can rely on a much deeper team than Houston.

Much like the Rockets, the Mavs started the season shorthanded since Josh Howard, Tim Thomas and Drew Gooden were sidelined by injuries. However, Josh Howard made his first appearance in 2009-10 in the Mavs’ encounter with the Toronto Raptors on Saturday and immediately made an impact. Ultimately, the Mavericks were able to blowout the Raps with an impressive 129-101 win and improved their record to 4-2. Provided Rick Carlisle’s starting five stays healthy they seem to be bound to make some noise in the Western Conference this year. More precisely, Josh Howard and Shawn Marion are two of the best two-way wing players in the league and will give most teams a tough time at both ends of the floor. Likewise, Rick Carlisle has plenty of different looks to throw at opposing teams, especially playing small ball with Jason Terry as shooting guard and Dirk Nowitzki as center could be a nightmare to defend. So far, franchise cornerstone Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavericks offensively, averaging 26.7 points, 8.8 boards and 2.7 assists per contest.

The Houston Rockets on the other hand did an exceptional job of compensating the loss of All-Stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady. In fact, Rick Adelman’s squad was able to defeat playoff teams such as the Utah Jazz and Portland Trailblazers. Albeit some might have though that Trevor Ariza would not blossom without Kobe Bryant creating open shots, he certainly proved his critics wrong. In the first two weeks of play, Ariza put up 20.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. Likewise, Aaron Brooks and Carl Landry surprised many with their play and have become a substantial part of Houston’s rotation. That said, it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to prevent the Dallas Mavericks from clinching a win on Wednesday night. After all, Dallas has a far more talented starting five and an extremely deep bench, even without Tim Thomas and Drew Gooden. Furthermore, the Rockets have no viable option defensively to guard Dirk Nowitzki who already had a big night in Houston during the preseason.
