Houston Rockets                          Golden State Warriors
Thursday 28th October 02:30 - 05:30 GMT

While the addition of All-Star David Lee might turn out to be a good move in the long run, it remains to be seen whether the overhauled Warriors will be able to make any significant improvement in 2010-11. Nonetheless, the Golden State Warriors will try to avoid a home loss versus Yao Ming and the Houston Rockets on Thursday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.

Even though Yao Ming will not be allowed to play more than 24 minutes per game and will have to sit-out the second night of back-to-backs in this year's NBA campaign, the return of the tall All-Star center will be a key factor for the Rockets nonetheless. After all, Yao will not only provide the squad of coach Rick Adelman with a serviceable low-post presence but will also improve Houston's spacing on the floor drastically. Likewise, veteran Brad Miller is certainly one of the better backup centers in the league and should help the franchise from Southern Texas to make it back to the playoff race down the stretch. Therefore, the Rockets will be highly motivated to start the season with a road win in Oakland on Thursday night.

Albeit the Warriors’ fans were hoping for a significant improvement in this year’s NBA campaign, the team from Oakland continued to struggle defensively and was unable to establish themselves in the playoff mix. Thus, Monta Ellis and company will take on the Houston Rockets at Oracle Arena on Friday at 3:30 a.m. GMT.

Unlike the Warriors, the Rockets are fairly content to stay in the playoff race after competing four weeks with a severely shorthanded squad. Posting an 8-8 record so far, Houston did play up to their potential and surprised many teams with the performance of their rotation players and second unit. Likewise, Trevor Ariza turned out to be an excellent fit for the franchise from Texas as he put up career numbers at 18.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.1 steals in 39 minutes per contest.

In contrast, Golden State Warriors ran into a lot of problems in the opening month of play. More specifically, former captain Stephen Jackson quit on the team and requested a trade during trading camp, ultimately leading to a lopsided deal with the Bobcats. That said, Raja Bell and Vladimir Radmanovic might fit into Don Nelson’s up-tempo system and could provide the team with a little bit more perimeter defense. Allowing a whopping 112 points per game, the lack of defensive energy has been a reoccurring issue for the Warriors and can account to a large extent for their mediocre 5-9 record. Therefore, Houston appears to have a slight edge over the struggling Warriors and might be able to steal one on the road on Friday. Yet, Golden State’s explosive offense could give the Rockets a run for their money on a good night.

Although the Golden State Warriors once again failed to reach the playoffs, it does not look like the franchise has any plans to make drastic changes. Thus, Andris Biedrins and company will travel to Texas where they will take on the Houston Rockets on Thursday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.

Despite the absence of Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, the Houston Rockets had a fairly decent pre-season that included wins versus the Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs. Especially Carl Landry looked like a player that could become an essential part of Rick Adelman’s rotation down the stretch. In eight preseason games, Landry put up 13.9 points and 5.0 rebounds in just over 21 minutes per contest. So far, the Rockets did fairly well but also showed their inability to find an adequate replacement for All-Star Yao Ming. More specifically, Chuck Hayes, Pops Mensah-Bonsu and David Andersen saw some playing time at the center position but failed to perform consistently. While Houston might get away with playing small ball versus undersized teams, they are bound to experience significant problems when trying to match-up with traditional centers.

The Golden State Warriors on the other hand are coming off a tumultuous off-season that raised many questions about the direction GM Larry Riley and coach Don Nelson are taking the franchise. Where as Nelson’s reckless up-tempo basketball has been discussed extensively, it is beyond many Warriors’ fans why the franchise gave up Corey Maggette for practically nothing during the off-season. Moreover, captain Stephen Jackson’s statement that he wants to be traded caused a heated debate around the franchise. Ultimately, Golden State might be looking to accommodate his wish but will have a hard time finding a team willing to take on his costly multi-year deal. That said, there are also some bright spots for the Warriors as sophomores Anthony Randolph and Anthony Morrow continue to improve while seventh overall pick Stephen Curry also showed a lot of potential during the preseason.

Given the fact that both teams have their fair share of issues to deal with, the match-up between the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors is still anyone’s game. The fact that the Warriors like to play small ball could favor the undersized Rockets, although it will not be an easy task to keep Andris Biedrins off the boards. Like in the past, the outcome of the game will depend to a great extent on the shape of the unpredictable Warriors who were among the most inconsistent teams in 2008-09.
