Houston Rockets v Los Angeles Clippers Live
Even though the Clippers started this year’s NBA campaign with four consecutive losses, Chris Kaman and company seem to be on their way back to the playoff race after one month of play. Thus, the Clippers will host the shorthanded Houston Rockets at Staples Center on Thursday at 3 a.m. GMT.
Albeit the Rockets got off to a surprisingly good start, the Texan franchise slowed down a bit last week as they experienced back-to-back blowout losses versus the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks at home. Therefore, Houston is hoping for Tracy McGrady to return to the floor sooner rather than later in order to help them to stay in the playoff mix of the competitive Western Conference. One issue has been the absence of Yao Ming who will most likely miss the entire season with yet another knee injury. Unable to find a way to contain opposing centers, the Rockets experienced significant problems defending the lane. That said, Rick Adelman squad is still sitting right at the .500 mark with an 8-8 record and has plenty of time to get used to their new rotation. One positive surprise has been rookie Chase Budinger who provided the Rockets with an unexpected lift off the bench as he put up 8.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists in just 18 minutes per contest.
Similarly, the Los Angeles Clippers also had to deal with some injury issues that might have prevented them from playing the way they wanted to. Most importantly, first overall pick Blake Griffin is still sidelined with a knee injury and might not return to the floor before Christmas. Yet, the Clippers played significantly better than last year and posted a 7-10 record to start the season. Even though these numbers might not sound impressive, it should be mentioned that the team around Chris Kaman lost various games in the last minutes of play that could have gone either way. Therefore, the Clippers might very well be able to compete for the eight playoff spot once coach Mike Dunleavy can operate with a healthy squad. In conclusion, Houston and L.A. appear to be on a level playing field when the game gets underway at Staples Center. While the Clippers will try to take advantage of their favorable front-court matchups, the Rockets might be able to expose L.A.’s perimeter defense due to their speedy guards and explosive wing players.
