Without any doubts, Rockets' fans were hoping for a much better start into this year's NBA campaign, yet, the team around Yao Ming lost three straight to start the season. While it is understandable that the off-season changes and the fact that Yao is back on the court change Houston's offensive sets, there is absolutely no excuse for allowing their opponents to score 117 points per contest. Thus, the Houston Rockets will try to get their first win of the season when Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs are in town on Sunday at midnight GMT.
Although it might be debatable whether the aging Spurs are still a legitimate championship contender or not, Tony Parker and company certainly showed that they are once again going to be one of the better teams in the Western Conference. More precisely, coach Greg Popovich's squad has been looking very sharp so far as they won two out of three games despite playing with a shorthanded front-court. Especially DeJuan Blair and George Hill have been playing much better than in 2009-10 and could help the team from Southern Texas to another solid season.

While the Spurs might not have dominated the preseason, the veteran team around Manu Ginobili showed that they can be expected to establish themselves in the upper echelon of the Western Conference once again. While franchise cornerstone Tim Duncan might be past his prime, forward DeJuan Blair and George Hill are improving rapidly and should help the team from Southern Texas to make some noise in 2010-11. Thus, Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs will host the Houston Rockets at AT&T Center on Friday at 0:30 a.m. GMT.
Although Yao Ming will most likely sit out the second night of back-to-back games in the upcoming NBA season, the Chinese All-Star center should still be able to improve Rick Adelman's squad drastically. With Yao Ming drawing double-teams in the paint, the Rockets will have much better spacing on the floor and should get more open looks on the perimeter than last year. Likewise, the acquisition of Brad Miller will provide Houston with another solid center who can rebound the ball and has excellent court vision. Therefore, NBA fans can expect a contested game between the Rockets and Spurs on Friday night.

Despite a great start into this year’s NBA campaign, the Rockets experienced considerable problems as of late and dropped all the way to the ninth place in the Western Conference. Highly motivated to get back on track, the Houston Rockets will make their way to San Antonio to face Manu Ginobili and the San Antonio Spurs at AT&T Center on Saturday at 1:30 a.m. GMT.
Unlike Houston, the Spurs came slow out of the gates but seem to find their rhythm as the season goes on. In fact, Tony Parker and company improved their record to 26-15 over the last weeks and find themselves right in the race for home-court advantage. Most importantly, San Antonio considerably tightened its defense and is among the best defensive teams in the league as they allow their opponents to score just 95 points per game. On the other end of the floor, the addition Richard Jefferson and rookie DeJuan Blair turned out to take a tremendous amount of pressure off Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. Albeit Jefferson did not put up big numbers like in the past, his 12.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists fit well into Greg Popovich’s well organized offense.
In contrast, the Rockets are not overly content with their performance in the past weeks as they just won five of their last ten and are struggling to stay in the playoff race. Tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Utah Jazz for the eight playoff seed, the team around Trevor Ariza will have to find a way to stay competitive without injured franchise cornerstone Yao Ming. That said, one should keep in mind that very few expected the shorthanded Rockets to even be in the playoff mix down the stretch. One positive aspect so far has been the performance of Carl Landry and Aaron Brooks. Especially starting point guard Aaron Brooks played extremely well, putting up 18.8 points, 5.0 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game. Taking everything into consideration, the Spurs evidently have more individual talent on board, yet both teams could be on a fairly level playing field. One issue for the Rockets is bound to be their undersized front-court which could cause serious problems versus Tim Duncan.
