Albeit the Suns' defense looked much better than last year in the first two playoff rounds, the team around Amar'e Stoudemire had significant problems containing the Lakers' offense in game one and two of the Western Conference Finals. Thus, the Phoenix Suns will try to get their act together when they take on Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers in game four on Wednesday at 1 a.m. GMT.
In contrast, the Lakers' front-office is very content with the improvements and adjustments Kobe Bryant and company were able to make throughout the playoffs. After a tough battle with Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder in round one, Los Angeles elevated their level of play considerably when they swept the Utah Jazz 2-0 in the Conference Semifinals. Likewise, the team from California was able to dominate the Suns in the first two games of the series, clinching 128-107 and 124-112 wins respectively. Where as Ron Artest struggled significantly at the offensive end of the floor, All-Star Pau Gasol carried the team in the low-post area, averaging 21.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.9 blocks per contest.
The Suns on the other hand will have to bring more defensive intensity to the floor in order to stay in the series down the stretch. Being down 2-0, Steve Nash and company are under a lot of pressure to secure a home win on Wednesday night. While Phoenix had no trouble scoring, their lack of perimeter defense allowed the Lakers' guards to penetrate and score all night long which ultimately led to said losses. Considering said circumstances, it looks like the Lakers will once again enter their encounter with the Suns as favorites to clinch another win and close out the series. Nonetheless, Phoenix can count on the support of their home crowd and will do their best to avoid another crucial loss.
