Memphis Grizzlies v Houston Rockets Live
Although the Memphis Grizzlies entered this year’s NBA campaign with hopes to make it to the post-season, the performance of coach Lionel Hollin’s squad did not look very promising in the first two weeks of action. Having to deal with a lot pressure, Memphis will try to snap a five-game losing streak when the game between the Grizzlies and Rockets gets underway at Toyota Center on Thursday at 1:30 a.m. GMT.
Unlike the Grizzlies, Houston’s front-office experienced a pleasant surprise when the shorthanded Houston Rockets squad managed to start the season with four wins in six games. Since Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady will remain sidelined in the foreseeable future, Rick Adelman young squad will get plenty of opportunities to prove that their performance thus far has been no fluke. Most importantly, Houston’s offense had no trouble scoring without their superstars and put up 104 points per contest. Likewise, it should be noted that the Rockets are not only playing without McGrady and Ming but also lost hard-nosed wingman Ron Artest to the Lakers during the off-season. In the absence of said players, Carl Landry and Aaron Brooks stepped up and showed that they are very capable starters on a playoff team. Moreover, rookie Chase Budinger surprised many by putting up 10.6 points per game in just 17 minutes off the bench.
While things are looking good in Texas, the Grizzlies once again had very little luck with their off-season moves, even though their roster looks pretty decent on paper. Unfortunately, second overall pick Hasheem Thabeet failed to make any measurable impact as he averaged only 0.7 points and 1.8 rebounds in no more than 6 minutes per contest. To make things even worse, Allen Iverson was not happy with his role as sixth man off the bench and announced that he will not be playing in the next weeks due to person reasons. Albeit signing Iverson to a one-year deal was generally considered a bold gamble, very few expected A.I. to quit after just appearing in two regular season games. As far the Grizzlies’ off-season acquisitions go, only Zach Randolph has been a positive surprise as the 28-year old power forward put up 20.3 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists in the first two weeks of play. Considering the aforementioned circumstances, Houston will enter their encounter with Memphis as favorites to come away with a win at home on Thursday night. Nonetheless, the team around Trevor Ariza should not underestimate the Grizzlies who can be a tough competitor on a good night. Most importantly, Rudy Gay and company will have to perform better at the defensive end of the floor if they want to stay within striking distance at Toyota Center.
