Albeit the Lakers showed some weaknesses as far as their perimeter defense is concerned in the first week of regular season action, the veteran team from California remains the favorite to win it all in 2010-11. Thus, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers are highly motivated to secure their second home win of the season when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.
Considering that the Grizzlies did win all of their preseason games, it was somewhat surprising that the team around Rudy Gay suffered a blowout loss versus the Atlanta Hawks on opening night. Nonetheless, Memphis can count on a talented young team and could very well stay in the playoff race down the stretch. Especially the improvement of Pau Gasol, O.J. Mayo and Mike Conley could be key factors in the Grizzlies' favor in this year's NBA campaign. That said, it appears to be rather unlikely that Memphis will be able to overcome Kobe Bryant and company on Wednesday night.

Although many reasoned that Memphis might be overdue for a significant improvement in 2009-10, the overhauled Grizzlies’ squad did not get off to a good start. Hoping to snap a three game losing streak, the Grizzlies will make their way to Los Angeles to face Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center on Sunday at 3 a.m. GMT.
In contrast, the Los Angeles Lakers managed to win four out of five and are looking to make a run during their prolonged homestand in November. However, it should be noted that the Lakers did not show any stellar performance so far and narrowly won their last three games. More specifically, Phil Jackson’s squad defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder by just three points before clinching a clutch 1-point overtime win versus the Houston Rockets on Wednesday. Most importantly, the Lakers are still missing All-Star Pau Gasol who has not fully recovered from a hamstring injury yet. In the mean time former MVP Kobe Bryant stepped up once again as he put up 33.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 3.2 steals per contest.
The Memphis Grizzlies on the other hand lost three straight and find themselves at the bottom of the Western Conference, just like last year. Although the additions during the off-season certainly paid dividends at the offensive end of the floor, Memphis’ defense looked horrendous thus far. Giving up 115 points per game, the Grizzlies will have to play with a higher energy level defensively if they plan to make any real progress in this year’s NBA campaign. That said, Allen Iverson has almost fully recovered from a minor injury and could see significant playing time versus the Lakers on Sunday. Nonetheless, the Lakers will enter their encounter with Memphis as everyone’s favorite to clinch a win versus the struggling Grizzlies. Albeit the team around Rudy Gay and Allen Iverson can score in a hurry, they will most likely not stand a chance versus L.A. unless they tighten up their defense. Unfortunately, adjusting defensive rotations and set schemes rarely takes place over night and will be an ongoing progress for the Grizzlies in 2009-10.
