After some promising games in the preseason, the Timberwolves failed to live up to the expectations of their fan base as the team around Michael Beasley lost five out of six games so far. Trying to play up to their full potential, the Minnesota Timberwolves will visit Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center on Wednesday at 3:30 a.m. GMT.

While some had their doubts whether the Lakers would be able to continue to dominate the Western Conference in 2010-11, the team around Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol demonstrated that they are once again going to be a championship contender in this year's NBA campaign. More precisely, the Lakers pulled off six straight wins to start the season and have been looking very sharp at both ends of the floor. Especially the offensive productivity of coach Phil Jackson squad has been off the charts as Los Angeles averaged no less than 113 points in the first two weeks of action. Therefore, Kobe Bryant and company can rightfully be considered favorites to extend their winning streak when the struggling T-Wolves are in California on Wednesday night.

Although the Lakers still lead the Western Conference, the margin between the team around Kobe Bryant and the Dallas Mavericks is steadily decreasing. Thus, the Los Angeles Lakers will try to hold on to the first place in the West when they face Al Jefferson and the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.

Without any doubts, the Timberwolves did not expect to compete for a playoff spot in this year's NBA campaign, yet a little bit more success would have been desirable. More precisely, the Wolves find themselves at the bottom of the Western Conference, posting a disappointing 14-54 record. Albeit rookie Jonny Flynn and center Ryan Hollins should some potential, the overall performance of Minnesota left much to be desired. Especially, franchise cornerstone Al Jefferson did not have the impact the Wolves' front-office was hoping for.

In contrast, the Los Angeles Lakers undisputed goal is defending their NBA title, anything else would certainly be a disappointment. So far everything went according to plan, although Phil Jackson's squad hit a slump as of late and dropped three straight last week. Nonetheless, there is no doubt that L.A. remains the team to beat in the Western Conference, even though they might experience a battle for the number one seed with the Dallas Mavericks and Denver Nuggets. Possibly on his way to another MVP award, Kobe Bryant has been spectacular all year long, averaging no less than 27.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.7 steals per contest. Taking said circumstances into account, the Lakers will most likely have an edge over the Wolves but should not underestimate Jonny Flynn and company.
