Monday 6th December 00:00 - 02:30 GMT

Albeit the Hornets won just five of their last ten games, the team around All-Star guard Chris Paul is nonetheless one of the better teams in the NBA and posted an excellent 13-5 record in the first month of regular season action. Thus, the New Orleans Hornets will try to steal one on the road when they visit Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs at AT&T Center on Monday at midnight GMT.

Given the fact that the Spurs lead the Western Conference with an excellent 15-3 record, San Antonio’s veteran squad does indeed seem to be ready to make another championship run in 2010-11. However, it is not only Manu Ginobili, Tim Duncan and Tony Parker who are having yet another great year, but also the Spurs’ young prospects DeJuan Blair and George Hill. Similarly, swingman Richard Jefferson appears to be more comfortable in Greg Popovich’s system than last year and was a major factor in San Antonio’s electrifying start into this year’s NBA campaign. That said, the Spurs will most likely have to bring their A-game on Monday night as the Hornets have shown that they can compete with anyone in the league.

While the Hornets might have struggled in the preseason, Chris Paul and company demonstrated that they are ready to go with a 95-91 home win versus the Milwaukee Bucks on opening night. That said, off-season acquisition Trevor Ariza did not seem to be comfortable in New Orleans' offense yet and showed a rather questionable shot selection so far. Thus, Chris Paul and the New Orleans Hornets will try to steal one on the road when they face the San Antonio Spurs at AT&T Center on Sunday at 0:30 a.m. GMT.

Albeit the Spurs' weak defensive performance in their home opener versus the Indiana Pacers was somewhat unexpected, the team around Tim Duncan also put on an offensive show to come away with a 122-109 victory. Similarly, it should also be noted that coach Greg Popovich had to play with a shorthanded front-court as center Tiago Splitter is still sidelined by an injury. Nonetheless, Manu Ginobili and company can be expected to enter their matchup with the Hornets highly motivated to secure their second home win on Sunday night.

Desperately trying to make it back to the playoff mix, the New Orleans Hornets have yet to find a way to compensate for the absence of franchise centerpiece Chris Paul. About to face another excellent team on the road, the New Orleans Hornets will make their way to San Antonio to take on Tim Duncan and the Spurs at AT&T Center on Saturday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.

Without any doubts, the Spurs did not even remotely live up to the expectations of their fans in this year’s NBA campaign. More precisely, the Texan franchise is just seventh in the Western Conference instead of competing for home-court advantage. Most importantly, Greg Popovich squad failed to perform on the road as the team around Tony Parker won just 12 of 26 away from home. Likewise, the acquisition of Richard Jefferson did not have the impact San Antonio’s front-office was hoping for. So far, Jefferson averages just 12.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 32 minutes per contest.

Much like the Spurs, the Hornets are not particularly excited with their performance up to this point either. In fact, New Orleans is still 2.5 games away from the eight playoff seed and will have to improve by leaps and bounds in order to make it to the post-season. That said, it should be mentioned that All-Star guard Chris Paul has been sidelined for nearly a month now and could very well lead the franchise from Louisiana to the playoffs once he is back on the floor. One positive surprise has been rookie Markus Thornton who put up 11.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.0 rebounds per contest. Taking everything into account, it looks like the Spurs might have a slight advantage over the Hornets on Saturday night. After all, San Antonio can finally count on a healthy squad where as New Orleans will have to play once again without Chris Paul.

Even though the Spurs’ post-season struggles in 2008-09 were primarily due to injuries, San Antonio’s front-office did not hesitate to improve their team during the off-season. With Richard Jefferson on board, the San Antonio Spurs are confidently heading into their season opener versus the New Orleans Hornets on Thursday at midnight GMT.

Despite high expectations for the 2008-09 season, the Hornets did not manage to make it past the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs. In fact, the 4-1 series loss and 121-63 game four blowout loss at home raised a lot of questions about the squad around Chris Paul and David West. Unfortunately, the economic climate, luxury tax threshold and market size in New Orleans Hornets provided the Hornets’ front office with very little leeway to improve the team. That said, GM Jeff Bower did an exceptional job of pulling off a trade that landed Emeka Okafor in New Orleans in exchange for Tyson Chandler. Moreover, the franchise acquired Mo Peterson, Rasual Butler and Darius Songeila during the off-season. As promising as these additions sound, the Hornets already bumped into some issues before the 2009-10 season even got underway. More specifically, Emeka Okafor refused to play with the team during the preseason even though he had been cleared for practice by New Orleans’ medical staff as well as his own doctor.

Unlike the Hornets, San Antonio Spurs is coming off a satisfying preseason and a stellar off-season. Firstly, franchise centerpieces Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili have fully recovered from their respective injuries and will join Tony Parker in the Spurs’ quest for another championship. Moreover, GM R.C. Buford was able to acquire small forward Richard Jefferson and power forward Antonio McDyess. In 2008-09, Richard Jefferson averaged 19.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game in 82 regular season games for the Milwaukee Bucks. While San Antonio would already have been among the best teams in the Western Conference without said additions, Jefferson and McDyess will inevitably turn the Spurs into a legitimate championship contender. Arguably the only team in the west capable of giving the Lakers a run for their money, the San Antonio Spurs are looking forward to establishing themselves at the top of the Western Conference right from game one.

Taking everything consideration, it is difficult not to give the Spurs an edge over the Hornets in their season opener. The depth of the bench and experience certainly favors San Antonio where as New Orleans is counting on Chris Paul and David West to draw double-teams and kick the ball out to their shooters. Either way, the audience will most likely get to see an exciting NBA game between two very competitive teams as well as a great point guard matchup between Tony Parker and Chris Paul.
