Oklahoma City Thunder                          Los Angeles Lakers
Monday 11th April 01:30 - 04:00 GMT

While some had their doubts whether the Thunder would be able to repeat last year’s success, the team around Kevin Durant demonstrated that they are capable to beat anyone on a given night as they rallied to a 27-13 record in the first three months of regular season play. Trying to get their fifth straight victory, the Oklahoma City Thunder will visit Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers at Tuesday at 3:30 a.m. GMT.

Even though the Lakers did not live up to their own expectations so far, the defending NBA champions from California have been playing much better basketball as of late. After winning eight of their last ten games, Kobe Bryant and company climbed to the second place in the Western Conference and might be able to challenge the San Antonio Spurs for the number one overall seed down the stretch. Especially All-Star forward Pau Gasol has simply been outstanding and put up 18.5 points, 10.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.9 blocks in 38 minutes per game. Taking the Lakers’ consistent performance over the past few weeks into account, the team around Kobe Bryant will enter its match-up with the Thunder as favorites to come away with a victory at Staples Center on Tuesday.

Even though it looked like the Thunder might be able to avoid a first-round matchup with the Lakers they ultimately fell to the last playoff spot in the Western Conference and do have a tough challenge ahead of them. Nonetheless, the franchise from Oklahoma is under very little pressure as hardly anyone expected the team around Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant to make it to the playoffs in 2009-10. Arguably the best scorer in the entire league, Kevin Durant experienced some problems in the first encounter with the Lakers two days ago and was only 7-of-23 from the floor and 1-of-7 from three point range.

In contrast, L.A. is hoping to defend their NBA title and dominate the post-season once again. Entering the playoffs as first seed in the West, the Lakers will enjoy home-court advantage possibly all the way to the Finals and are looking to extend their lead over the Thunder to 2-0 on Wednesday night. Without any doubts, the addition of Ron Artest already paid dividends as he made life very hard for Kevin Durant in the opening game on Sunday. Likewise, Spanish power forward Pau Gasol is having a great year at 18.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.8 blocks per contest. Thus, Los Angeles will most likely have an edge over Oklahoma in game two as coach Phil Jackson's squad has more individual talent on board and can count on Kobe Bryant to take over the show when needed. Nonetheless, the Thunder will not be an easy opponent as their efficient team defense has been a tough obstacle to overcome all season long.

Without any doubts, the Oklahoma City Thunder young core is on its way to transform into a playoff team in the not too distant future. Yet, Kevin Durant and company are about to face a tough challenge when the game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Oklahoma City Thunder gets underway on Monday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.

After winning only 23 games in 2008-09, Oklahoma seems to be dedicated to make a major leap in this year’s NBA campaign. Given the fact that Kevin Durant, Jeff Green and Russell Westbrook have yet to reach the peek of their career, the Thunder could make their first post-season appearance soon. So far, the team of coach Scott Brooks got off to a fairly good start as they are still above the .500 mark with a 6-5 record. Likewise, Kevin Durant appears to be overdue for his first All-Star game appearance as he put up 28.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.5 steals per contest. Similarly, first round pick James Harden showed some promising signs but has yet to see significant playing time.

Unlike the Thunder, the Los Angeles Lakers are not simply planning to make it to the playoffs, but are hoping to defend their NBA title. Even with Pau Gasol sidelined by a hamstring injury, the Lakers stayed in the upper echelon of the Western Conference as they managed to win 8 out of 11. With Gasol out of the picture, Kobe Bryant stepped up and carried his team with 31.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.3 steals per game. In addition to Bryant’s efforts, the Lakers got a lift off Andrew Bynum who arguably has become the best center in the Western Conference at this point. Taking everything into consideration, Kobe Bryant and company will enter their matchup with the Thunder as favorites to secure a win at home, but might find themselves in a close game with Oklahoma. In fact, the first encounter between these two teams went to overtime and if Kevin Durant and Jeff Green play up to their potential, the Thunder could very well stay within striking distance throughout the game.
