Orlando Magic v Boston Celtics Live
Considering the Celtics’ additions over the summer, it was no surprise that Paul Pierce and company got off to a great start into this year’s NBA campaign. Eyeballing their ninth win, the Celtics will host Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic on Saturday at 1 a.m. GMT.
Much like Boston, the Magic wasted no time to establish themselves among the best teams in the Eastern Conference. Holding on to a 7-3 record, Orlando showcased some impressive inside-out basketball with Dwight Howard kicking the ball out to the Magic’s perimeter shooters. Given the fact that Vince Carter missed some games and All-Star Rashard Lewis served a 10-game suspension, one can only imagine how well Stan van Gundy’s squad might play down the stretch. In the first three weeks of play, Dwight Howard led all scores with 19.2 points, 10.7 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.4 assists in just 31 minutes per contest.
After failing to defend their championship title last year, the Celtics’ front-office decided to add some more talent to Doc Rivers’ squad as they acquired Rasheed Wallace, Marquis Daniels and Shelden Williams over the summer. While Wallace was a safe bet to fit into the existing core around Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, very few expected Williams and Daniels to have any measurable impact. Yet, both players turned out to be valuable rotation players who excel at the defensive end of the floor while still finding the basket offensively. Likewise, Rajon Rondo picked up where he left off in the playoffs, putting up 10.3 points, 8.7 assists, 3.5 boards and 2.7 steals in 32 minutes per game. Given the fact that both teams are championship contenders and performed well thus far, the match-up between the Magic and Celtics might still be anyone’s game. Either team has depth at nearly every position and has proven that they are able to play at both ends of the floor. One x-factor could be the return of Rashard Lewis who was an essential part of Orlando’s run to the NBA Finals in 2008-09 but was sidelined due to a suspension in the first three weeks of play.

After an 83-75 win on their home court, the Orlando Magic managed to force Boston into a game seven in this Eastern Conference semi-finals series. Hoping to advance to the Conference finals the Celtics will now host the Magic on Monday at 1 a.m. GMT at TD Banknorth Garden.
Although game six was fairly close from the tip-off until the end, it took the Magic more than three quarters to take their first lead with eight minutes remaining in the fourth. Afterwards the lead was going back and forth until the Magic started to pull away in the last four minutes. Celtics’ coach Doc Rivers was not happy at all after the game which is understandable considering the mediocre offensive effort Boston showed on Friday. Likewise, the Celtics turned the ball over 19 times which helped the Magic to get easy lay-ups in transition.
Unhappy with his limited amount of touches in game five, Orlando’s All-Star Dwight Howard publicly criticized coach Stan van Gundy which earned him a fair share of criticism around the NBA in return. However, Howard was able to follow up his harsh words with a terrific performance. Finishing the game with 23 points and 22 rebounds he achieved one of the most impressive double-doubles of this year’s post-season. Rashard Lewis added another 20 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists for the Magic while Orlando’s other starters were struggling for most of the game. Boston on the other hand was led by point guard Rajon Rondo who had 19 points, 16 rebounds and 6 assists. In fact, Rondo is having an incredible post-season so far nearly averaging a triple-double with 17.7 points, 10.1 assists and 9.5 rebounds per game
Considering Boston’s recent performance versus the Magic, there appear to be several key issues which will have to be addressed before game seven. Firstly, Ray Allen has to find his shooting rhythm and start knocking down shots from beyond the arc. Averaging over 40% throughout the regular season he has been held to 14% from three point range in this series. Since Kevin Garnett is out for the playoffs Allen will have to step up as Rondo and Pierce cannot do all the scoring themselves. Moreover, the Celtics will have to take better care of the ball. If they get anywhere close to the 19 turnovers they had in game six, odds are they are not going to advance. Although one has to take into consideration that due to their injuries Boston’s starters had to play a ton of minutes in the playoffs so far, they will have to bring all the energy they got to the court on Sunday to avoid elimination.
