Sunday 9th January 01:30 - 04:00 GMT

Having won five straight, the trade for Gilbert Arenas, Hedo Turkoglu and Jason Richardson obviously paid dividends for the Magic and helped them to stay in striking distance of the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat. Hoping to climb to the third place in the Eastern Conference, Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic will try to steal one on the road when they play the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday at 1:30 a.m. GMT.

While the Mavs might be a legitimate contender when everyone is healthy, there is no doubt that the franchise from Northern Texas will struggle to hold on to the second place in the West if Dirk Nowitzki and Caron Butler are sidelined for an extended period of time. More specifically, the Mavericks lost three straight versus the Toronto Raptors, San Antonio Spurs and Milwaukee Bucks when both forwards went down with injuries last week. Ultimately, Dallas could not compensate for the loss of their two leading scorers and things got even more difficult when Jason Terry hit a slump instead of stepping up. Thus, Jason Kidd and company will face another difficult opponent when they host the Magic on Sunday night.

Even though the Mavs slowed down over the last two weeks of March, the team around Dirk Nowitzki managed to get back on track with back-to-back wins versus the Golden State Warriors and Denver Nuggets last week. Thus, the Dallas Mavericks will try to hold on to their positive momentum when they take on Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic at American Airlines Center on Friday at midnight GMT.

Unlike the Mavericks, the Magic have been on fire as of late and went on to win eight of their last ten games. With just eight games left in the regular season, it looks like Orlando will enter the playoffs as second seed in the Eastern Conference as they enjoy a comfortable 5-game lead over the Boston Celtics, posting an excellent 52-22 record. Like in recent years, the franchise from Florida has been led by All-Star center Dwight Howard who put up 18.8 points, 13.3 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per contest.

Dallas on the other hand went through some major changes this year as the franchise’s front-office is desperately trying to make a run for a championship ring as long as Dirk Nowitzki is still in his prime. More precisely, the addition of Brendan Haywood, Caron Butler, Shawn Marion and rookie guard Rodrigue Beaubois has elevated the level of play of Rick Carlisle’s squad drastically. Trying to secure the second place in the tough Western Conference, the Mavs have played excellent basketball since the All-Star break and just pulled off a blow-out win versus the Denver Nuggets a few days ago in which Dirk Nowitzki recorded the second triple-double of his career. Therefore, both teams might find themselves on a fairly level playing field when the game between the Magic and Mavericks gets underway on Friday night.
