Even though the Suns four game winning streak came to an end in their encounter with Kobe Bryant and the Lakers on Thursday night, there is no doubt about the excellent shape of coach Alvin Gentry’s squad. Hoping to steal one on the road, Amar’e Stoudemire and company will take on the shorthanded Houston Rockets at Toyota Center on Wednesday at 1:30 a.m. GMT.

While many experts around the league predicted the Suns to continue their downfall and spend another year in the lottery, things turned out differently in the first two weeks of play. More precisely, Phoenix is holding on to a second place in the Western Conference as they posted an outstanding 8-2 record to start the 2009-10 season. Especially point guard Steve Nash looked like back in his MVP days, leading the Suns’ offense with 17.1 points and an incredible 11.8 assists in only 32 minutes per contest. Even though it should be mentioned that the Suns’ defense has been as unorganized and static as in the past, the team had no problems finding the basket and simply outscored their opponents.

Similarly, the Houston Rockets are also fairly content with their performance thus far as they managed to win five out of eight despite starting the season without Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming. Where as Yao Ming will most likely miss the entire season, McGrady is expected to return at some point over the next month and could be able to carry the Rockets to the upper echelon of the Western Conference. That said, Rick Adelman squad showed a lot of heart in the first two weeks of action, albeit they had tremendous problems matching up with big centers and physical power forwards. While said issues will have to be addressed as the season progresses, Trevor Ariza appeared to be a great fit for Houston. Averaging 18.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.5 steals per game, he really took his game to the next level in Texas. Considering said circumstances, the Rockets could be able to give the Suns a run for their money on Wednesday night. After all, Phoenix plays with an undersized team as well, thus avoiding uneven match-ups at the center position. Even though the Rockets’ offense is not nearly as explosive as the Suns’ efforts near the hoop, they might be able to stay within striking distance if they play aggressively at the other end of the floor and work hard to contain Amar’e Stoudemire and Steve Nash.
