Phoenix Suns                          Los Angeles Lakers
Wednesday 23rd March 02:30 - 05:00 GMT

After some ups and downs in the first half of the season, the Lakers managed to elevate their level of play over the past few weeks and climbed to the second place in the West, holding on to a 49-20 record. Especially the strong play of Andrew Bynum was a big difference and helped Phil Jackson’s squad at both ends of the floor. Looking for their fourth consecutive win, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers will host the Phoenix Suns at Staples Center on Wednesday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.

While the Lakers are trying to secure the second place in the Western Conference, the Suns are hoping to stay in the playoff race in order to clinch the eight playoff berth down the stretch. However, Phoenix won just four of its last ten games and is two games behind the Memphis Grizzlies with Houston and Utah in between. Apart from the Suns’ well-known defensive shortcomings, the team around All-Star guard Steve Nash is also struggling to rebound the ball at just 40.1 boards per contest. In this sense, it remains questionable whether Phoenix will be able to slow down the Lakers’ explosive offense on Wednesday night.

Having won just three out of seven so far, things have not been going particularly well for the Suns in the first three weeks of regular season action. Thus, the Phoenix Suns will visit Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.

While some might have had their doubts whether the Lakers would be able to compete with the improved Celtics and Heat in this year's NBA campaign, Kobe Bryant and company certainly showed that they are still the best team in the league. More specifically, coach Phil Jackson's squad won eight straight to start the 2010-11 season and looked even stronger than last year. One positive surprise was Lamar Odom who has been playing phenomenal, averaging 15.8 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. Similarly, the Lakers have been the best offensive team in the entire league as they put up 112 points per contest up to this point. Therefore, the team around Kobe Bryant will be everyone's favorite to clinch another win at Staples Center on Monday night.

Albeit the Lakers experienced a few problems in their first-round match-up with Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder, the franchise from California was able to elevate their level of play as they swept the Utah Jazz in the Conference Semifinals. Thus, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers will host the Phoenix Suns in game one of the Western Conference Semifinals at Staples Center on Tuesday at 1 a.m. GMT.

Without any doubts, Amar'e Stoudemire and the Suns are one of the biggest surprises of this year's NBA campaign. Before the season got underway, most experts reasoned that their cost-cutting moves last summer could even prevent them from making it to the post-season. Yet, Phoenix did not only secure home-court advantage in the competitive Western Conference, but also rallied to the Western Conference Finals after beating Brandon Roy and the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round and subsequently sweeping the San Antonio Spurs in the Conference Semifinals. Most surprisingly, the Suns' up-tempo basketball around All-Star guard Steve Nash worked out very well, despite Phoenix's evident lack of defense. Leading the team in the post-season is wing man Jason Richardson who averages 21.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest.

The Lakers on the other hand are the undisputed favorites to make it to the finals and have shown throughout the season that they are dedicated to defend their NBA title. That said, it was somewhat unforeseen that the Oklahoma City Thunder made life extremely difficult for Los Angeles in the first playoff round, yet Kobe Bryant and company were able to close out the series in six highly contested games. Obviously, former MVP Kobe Bryant is still the heart and soul of the franchise as he put up nearly 27 points per game in the post-season despite nagging finger and ankle injuries. Likewise, forward Pau Gasol has been phenomenal, averaging 20.2 points, 13.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.9 blocks per contest. Taking everything into consideration, the Lakers appear to have a slight edge over the Suns, yet the team around Steve Nash could very well upset the favorites from L.A. if they manage to continue their dominance at the offensive end of the floor.

Being tied for the first place in the Western Conference, Kobe Bryant and the Lakers are right where they wanted to be after one month of play. Thus, Los Angeles will take on the Phoenix Suns at Staples Center on Monday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.

While most experts expected the Lakers to be right at the top of the Western Conference after their prolonged homestand, very few anticipated that the Suns would win 14 out of 17 to start the season. Albeit Steve Nash and company dropped one on the road at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, they still appear to perform more consistently than in 2008-09. Most importantly, coach Alvin Gentry’s squad improved a bit defensively while putting up 112 points per contest thus far. With Amar’e Stoudemire back from his eye-injury, Grant Hill healthy for once and Steve Nash averaging career numbers, Phoenix looked like they might stay in the race for homecourt advantage down the stretch.

Much like the Suns, the Los Angeles Lakers also got off to a great start as they rallied to a 14-3 record. Although Phil Jackson’s squad was without All-Star Pau Gasol for the first twelve games, they had no trouble finding the basket and could rely on Kobe to take over the show whenever needed. Likewise, Ron Artest appeared to fit well into his new role and averaged 12.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.1 steals in 33 minutes per game. Similarly, center Andrew Bynum continued to improve as he put up nearly 20 points and 10 rebounds per contest. After seven straight wins, Kobe Bryant and the Lakers will be looking for another victory when the Phoenix Suns are in town. Even though Phoenix might have just as many wins as the Lakers, it appears to be rather questionable whether they will be able to keep scoring at their usual pace at Staples Center. After all, L.A. is one of the best defensive teams in the league and has plenty of viable options to contain the Suns’ explosive wing players. Either way, fans around the league can expect an exciting match of up-tempo basketball when the game between the Suns and Lakers gets underway on Monday night.

Even though the Los Angeles Lakers entered this year’s NBA campaign shorthanded, they still got off to a great start as they managed to win six out of seven to start the season. Thus, Kobe Bryant and company are confidently heading into their home game versus the Phoenix Suns at Staples Center on Friday at 3:30 a.m. GMT.

Just like the Lakers, the Phoenix Suns also posted an impressive 6-1 record in the first two weeks of play and showed that they have no intentions of spending another year in the lottery. Although some pointed to the Suns’ fairly easy schedule in the first week of play, there is no doubt about the strength of the team around Amar’e Stoudemire after they defeated the Boston Celtics at TD Banknorth Garden last Saturday. Offensively, Steve Nash has been phenomenal as the former MVP put up 17.9 points and 11.9 assists per game.

The Los Angeles Lakers on the other hand are still playing without All-Star Pau Gasol but had very little trouble staying ahead of their competitors in the Western Conference. Likewise, starting center Andre Bynum missed two games and will most likely be a game-time decision on Friday night. Nonetheless, Kobe Bryant carried his team to a great start into the 2009-10 season as he led all scores with 33.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.6 rebounds and 2.6 steals per contest. Moreover, Ron Artest seemed to fit well into L.A.’s triangle offense, averaging 12.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. Although his scoring might be down a bit, one has to consider that he was asked to accept his new role as third option offensively and facilitated the Lakers’ ball movement. Taking everything into consideration, the Lakers appear to be everyone’s pick to clinch a win in their encounter with the Suns at Staples Center. That said, the team around Kobe Bryant will have to bring a high energy level at the defensive end of the floor to prevent Phoenix from having another 100+ point night.

Arguably being surrounded by the best support cast since his arrival in Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant is hoping to make another run at the NBA championship in 2009-10. Coming off a win versus the Clippers, the Lakers will host Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns at Staples Center on Saturday at 0:30 a.m. GMT.

Even though Pau Gasol will be a game-time decision, the Lakers showed in their season opener that the depth of their roster can compensate for the loss of the Spanish All-Star. More specifically, combo-forwards Lamar Odom and Ron Artest provided the team of Phil Jackson with a presence on both ends of the floor and stuck to the Lakers' triangle offense.

The Phoenix Suns on the other hand will enter the season without a viable option at the center position after Shaquille O'Neal was traded to the Cavaliers during the off-season. Thus, it remains to be seen how much small ball with Amar'e Stoudemire at the five the audience will get to see. Ultimately, Phoenix has nobody on their roster to guard Andrew Bynum in the low-post and will try to get away with said mismatch. Fortunately, Steve Nash will not have to go up against a quick guard as veteran guard Derek Fisher also lost a step or two in recent years.

Taking everything into consideration, it appears to be fairly unlikely that Phoenix will steal a game versus the Lakers on the road. They do neither have the depth nor the talent level of this year's Lakers squad. Moreover, the Suns' up-tempo system will inevitably lead to defensive breakdowns that Kobe Bryant and company might take advantage of.
