San Antonio Spurs v Chicago Bulls Live
Although the Chicago Bulls lost Ben Gordon during the off-season, the team around Derrick Rose looked pretty good in the preseason and is confidently heading into this year’s NBA campaign. Thus, the Bulls will host Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs in their home opener at United Center on Friday at midnight GMT.
Despite the heated debate about the impact of Ben Gordon’s departure on the Bulls, Chicago Bulls seemed to play well without their former shooting guard so far. Posting an outstanding 6-2 preseason record, the Bulls’ young core appears to constantly mature and elevate their level of play. Although it should be mentioned that the team from Michigan played 4 of their 8 preseason games versus the struggling Minnesota Timberwolves and Milwaukee Bucks, they were also able to secure a win versus the Utah Jazz and made the Orlando Magic work very hard for their 3-point win. Especially the return of Luol Deng could be a key for the Bulls’ quest for a playoff spot in 2009-10. Although he seemed a bit out of synch at times, Deng still put up 10.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 27 minutes per contest during the preseason. Likewise, Tyrus Thomas and Derrick Rose can be expected to continue improving and could keep Chicago in the playoff race down the stretch.
In contrast, Greg Popovich’s Spurs appear to be a safe bet to finish in the upper echelon of the Western Conference. Hoping to win another championship this year, Tim Duncan and Tony Parker will be surrounded by arguably the best support cast they ever had during their time in Texas. Richard Jefferson, Manu Ginobili, Roger Mason Jr. and Antonio McDyess are very capable two-way players who fit perfectly into Popovich’s defensive minded system. However, unlike in recent years, San Antonio will have more offensive firing power apart from their ‘Big Three’.
Taking everything into consideration, the Spurs will be entering their road encounter with the Bulls as everyone’s favorite to secure a victory. Even though the Bulls might have a bright future ahead of them, they lack both the individual talent and the experience to compete with the Spurs. Moreover, coach Greg Popovich has proven to be one of the best in the business and led less talented Spurs’ squads to 50+ win seasons.
