Holding on to an outstanding 26-4 record, Tim Duncan and company showcased that they are still among the best teams in the league and are confident to compete for a title in 2010-11. Thus, the San Antonio Spurs will get ready for a clash with their division rivals when they visit Jason Kidd and the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center on Friday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.

Without any doubts, the Mavs’ front-office could not have hoped for a better first three months in this year’s NBA campaign. Holding on to the second best record in the league with 24 wins in 29 games, the veteran team around All-Star Dirk Nowitzki demonstrated remarkable defensive progress and can now be considered a legitimate championship contender going forward. Likewise, shooting guard Jason Terry is having another great year off the bench, averaging 15.8 points, 4.6 assists, 1.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals per contest. That said, the Mavs’ encounter with the Spurs will be a tough game on Friday night, especially because franchise cornerstone Dirk Nowitzki will be a game-time decision due to a nagging knee injury.

After five straight wins at the end of the regular season, Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavs are confidently entering the playoffs having secured the second seed in the Western Conference. Thus, the Dallas Mavericks will host Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs in the first playoff round at American Airlines Center on Monday at midnight GMT.

Considering that the Spurs entered this year's NBA campaign as a championship contender there is no doubt the franchise's front-office is not particularly happy with the team's seventh place finish in the Western Conference. However, Greg Popovich's squad still has the opportunity to bounce back in the post-season as their veteran squad has shown countless times that it can perform in crunch-time. Most importantly, San Antonio can count on a healthy squad with Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan back on the court.

The Mavs on the other hand rallied all the way to the second place in the West and are hoping to finally make some noise in the playoffs after three disappointing years of first and second round post-season exits. Without any doubts, Jason Kidd and company improved significantly after the All-Star break, partially due to the acquisition of former All-Star Caron Butler and center Brendan Haywood. Likewise, Shawn Marion has recovered successfully from a back injury and can be expected to make life difficult for the Spurs' wing players. Therefore, the Mavericks might have a slight advantage over San Antonio in the first playoff game at American Airlines Center on Monday. After all, Dallas has a much deeper squad than the Spurs and played more consistently at both ends of the floor throughout the regular season.

Where as the Mavs are hoping to secure the second place in the West, the Spurs are desperately trying to avoid a first-round encounter with Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers. Thus, Jason Kidd and the Dallas Mavericks will try to clinch an important win when they take on their rivals from San Antonio at American Airlines Center on Thursday at midnight GMT.

Unlike the Mavericks, the Spurs are not where they would like to be as they are tied for the eight place in the Western Conference. Obviously, meeting the Los Angeles Lakers in the first playoff round would be rather undesirable, thus the Texan franchise can be expected to play hard to avoid said match-up. Nonetheless, Tim Duncan and company are not to be underestimated as their veteran squad is certainly capable of making some noise in the post-season, despite a possibly unfavorable seed. Especially Manu Ginobili appears to be back in shape after a series of nagging injuries. So far, Ginobili managed to average 16.5 points, 4.9 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game.

In contrast, the Mavs played well all season long and could be able to finally make a run for a championship ring. More precisely, Dallas is currently tied for the second place in the West and has the advantage of holding the tie-breaker versus Denver in case both teams end up with the same win-loss record. One issue that has yet to be settled is Rick Carlisle's rotation come playoff time. Most importantly, the Mavericks will have to figure out whether J.J. Barea or rookie Rodrigue Beaubois will get Jason Kidd backup minutes at the point guard position. Like in the past, the audience can expect a hard-nosed battle when the game between the Mavs and Spurs gets underway on Thursday night. Apart from the usual rivalry, the game could turn out to be crucial for either team as far as their playoff seed and subsequent first round match-up is concerned.

Posting a 7-3 record to start this year’s NBA campaign, Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks did not waste any time to establish themselves in the upper echelon of the Western Conference. Hoping to compete for home-court advantage down the stretch, the Mavs will take on the Spurs at American Airlines Center on Thursday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.

Unlike the Mavs, the San Antonio Spurs are not overly content with their performance in the first three weeks of action. More specifically, Greg Popovich’s squad lost four out of eight, including two frustrating losses versus the Oklahoma City Thunder. That said, it should be mentioned that the Spurs sorely missed Tony Parker and Tim Duncan who were sidelined by minor injuries. In contrast, sophomore George Hill and second round pick DeJuan Blair turned out to be valuable pieces off the bench and can be expected to stay in San Antonio’s rotation. Likewise, Richard Jefferson seemed to fit well into the existing core around Tony Parker and Tim Duncan as he averaged 15.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists in his first eight games with the Spurs.

Although the Mavericks lost their first encounter with Tim Duncan and company at AT&T Center, they quickly shook of the defeat and rallied to back-to-back wins in Minnesota and Detroit. One issue has been the health of Josh Howard who will miss another few weeks trying to nurse his surgically repaired ankle after appearing in just two games this season. However, in Howard’s absence rookie Roddy Beaubois took advantage of the opportunity to get some playing time and put together two very nice performances versus the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons. Benefiting from his athleticism, the 21-year old combo guard put up 14 and 9 points respectively despite averaging only 17 minutes per game. Less surprising has been the steady performance of franchise cornerstone Dirk Nowitzki who leads Dallas with 25.8 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.7 blocks per contest.

Taking the aforementioned situation of the Spurs and Mavs into consideration, the audience can expect a hard-nosed battle between two fairly even teams on Thursday night. Ultimately, both have plenty of offensive firing power on their roster and have shown that they can make things difficult for their opponents at the other end of the floor. The fact that San Antonio Spurs is only 4-4 thus far should not be overestimated as Tony Parker and company are bound finish the season somewhere around 50 wins, provided everyone stays healthy.
