San Antonio Spurs v Phoenix Suns Live
Given the fact that the Suns were looking to cut their payroll last summer, it is somewhat surprising that the franchise from Arizona is competing for home-court advantage in this year's NBA campaign. Thus, the Suns will try to clinch their tenth straight win when they host Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.
Despite adding more fire power to their roster in the off-season, the Spurs failed to live up to their own expectations thus far. More specifically, San Antonio is merely holding on to the seventh place in the Western Conference and far away from where they want to be. Albeit Richard Jefferson sounded like a great addition to Greg Popovich's defensive minded system, he was not able to improve the Spurs significantly at either end of the floor. Moreover, Tony Parker offensive productivity declined by nearly 10 points per contest while Tim Duncan is undoubtedly past his prime. That said, one bright spot has been sophomore guard George Hill who put up 12.7 points, 2.9 assists and 2.7 rebounds while shooting 40% from beyond the arc.
In contrast, Suns fans could hardly be any happier with the way the season turned out thus far. Posting an excellent 49-26 record, Amar'e Stoudemire and company are still in the race for home-court advantage and hoping to make some noise come post-season play. Much like in recent years, Phoenix relies to a large extend on their dynamic offense led by All-Star point guard Steve Nash to compensate for lacks on the defensive end of the floor. In fact, Nash is having a career year as he managed to average 16.7 points, 11.1 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. Thus, fans around the league can expect a very exciting ball game when the Suns host the Spurs on Thursday night. While it remains to be seen whether San Antonio's defense will be able to contain the team around Amar'e Stoudemire, the outcome of the game will inevitably play an important role as far as playoff match-ups are concerned.
