San Antonio Spurs                          Utah Jazz
Thursday 27th January 02:30 - 05:00 GMT

Whereas the Jazz are hanging on to a solid 27-17 record halfway through the season, Deron Williams and company have lost some of their momentum as they dropped four straight on the road last week. Especially Utah’s rebounding numbers will have to go up sooner rather than later as coach Jerry Sloan’s squad ranks at the bottom of the league in boards per game. Thus, the Utah Jazz will host Tony Parker and the San Antonio Spurs at Energy Solutions Arena on Thursday at 2:30 a.m. GMT.

Unlike Utah, the Spurs’ performance has simply been phenomenal night in and night out. Leading the NBA with a 37-7 record, San Antonio won 13 of its last 14 games and dominated the Western Conference up to this point. Well on his way to another All-Star appearance, Manu Ginobili led the franchise with 18.5 points, 4.8 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals per contest. Therefore, everything appears to be pointing to yet another Spurs’ win when the game between San Antonio and Utah gets underway on Thursday.

Coming off a tough loss in Dallas, the Utah Jazz are under a lot of pressure to bounce back from a disappointing 1-3 season start. Thus, the team around Deron Williams is hoping to get a lift from their home crowd when they face the San Antonio Spurs on Friday at 3:30 a.m. GMT.

Albeit the Spurs were able to win their home games versus the New Orleans Hornets and Sacramento Kings, not everything went well so far. More specifically, Tony Parker and company dropped one on the road versus the Bulls and are still trying to integrate their recently acquired players. In the first week of play, Richard Jefferson and Antonio McDyess only averaged 11.7 and 5.0 points per contest, significantly less than they put up in the past. Offensively, the Spurs were led by franchise cornerstone Tim Duncan who put up 14.7 points and 12.7 boards per game.

The Jazz on the other hand lost two straight versus the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets and still appear to be out of synch. Especially the loss versus the Mavs was very frustrating for Jerry Sloan squad as they blew a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter and got steamrolled by Dirk Nowitzki who scored a franchise high 29 points in the last twelve minutes. Thus, the Jazz will have to do their best to get said game out of their heads and focus on the tough task at hand. In order to overcome the Spurs it will most likely take an exceptional performance of Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer. Considering how poorly Boozer shot the ball thus far, he might be overdue to play up to his potential. That said, the Spurs will still enter their encounter with the Jazz as everyone’s favorite to clinch a win in Salt Lake City. Ultimately, San Antonio is one of the best teams in the league and can be expected to head to Utah well-rested after two days off.
