Toronto Raptors                          Boston Celtics
Saturday 8th January 00:30 - 03:00 GMT

Albeit the Celtics did a good job of compensating for the absence of Kendrick Perkins and Jermaine O’Neal, the hamstring injury of starting point guard Rajon Rondo was a much bigger setback last week. Thus, Kevin Garnett and the Boston Celtics will try to avoid their second straight loss to the Toronto Raptors when the two teams meet again on Saturday at 0:30 a.m. GMT.

In contrast, Raptors’ head coach Jay Triano is very content with the way his team has been playing as of late. After all, Andrea Bargnani and company managed to bounce back from a slow start into the 2010-11 season when they won three straight last week. One key to success has been the Raps’ defensive energy and relentless effort to push the ball in transition. Likewise, swingman Sonny Weems has not only developed a reliable three-point shot but has also been improving across the board, averaging 14.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists per contest so far. Therefore, Toronto could very well force the shorthanded Celtics into another contested ball game on Saturday night.

Judging by the Celtics' success in the preseason, GM Danny Ainge decision to further strengthen Boston's front-court appears to be working out as planned this summer. With, Shaquille O'Neal, Jermaine O'Neal and Semih Erden on board, coach Doc Rivers can count on a very deep front-court that will come in handy throughout the 82 regular season games. Looking for another win, Rajon Rondo and the Boston Celtics will meet the Toronto Raptors at TD Garden on Sunday at 10 p.m. GMT.

After a surprisingly easy victory versus the Phoenix Suns earlier this week, the Raptors certainly looked better than most experts expected the team to play. After all, Toronto just lost franchise cornerstone Chris Bosh to the Miami Heat and is entering the new season without any stars and many new faces on board. So far, Linas Kleiza and Leandro Barbosa looked like excellent additions and the Raptors collectively showed better team defense and pressure on the perimeter. That said, it appears to be rather unlikely that Toronto will be able to overcome Kevin Garnett and company on Sunday night. Ultimately, the Celtics have much more individual talent and and will be able to benefit from the veteran leaders Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett on the floor.

Even though the expectations for the revamped Toronto Raptors were sky high, the team around Chris Bosh failed to play up to its potential in the first three weeks of action. Thus, the Raps will head to Boston where they will take on the Boston Celtics at TD Banknorth Garden on Saturday at 0:30 a.m. GMT.

After a lot of changes during the off-season, the Raptors’ front-office was confident that Jay Triano’s overhauled squad would be in the playoff race, possibly competing for home-court advantage. Yet, the Canadian franchise did not get off to a great start and posted a mediocre 6-8 record so far. Albeit their offense looked much better than last year, they turned out to be one of the worst defensive teams in the league. More specifically, Toronto allowed no less than 108 points per contest and showed significant shortcomings in terms of 1-on-1 coverage and defensive rotation schemes. That said, the Raps started this year’s NBA campaign with a fairly difficult schedule and a lot of road games versus playoff teams. Offensively, Chris Bosh has been very dominant thus far and posted career numbers, averaging 26.6 points and 11.7 rebounds. Likewise, Andrea Bargnani continued to improve as he put up 17.9 points and 6.6 rebounds while shooting 42% from three-point range.

In contrast, the Boston Celtics are relatively content with their performance thus far and wasted no time to establish themselves in the upper echelon of the Eastern Conference. Holding on to a 10-4 record, Kevin Garnett and company are hoping to stay near the top of the conference as they will play 10 out of 14 games on the road. Most importantly, the Celtics’ defense has been outstanding in the first month of action, holding their opponents to just 89 points per game. At the other end of the floor Boston had no trouble scoring either, led by multiple All-Star Paul Pierce who put up 19.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 35 minutes per contest. Taking everything into account, it looks like the Toronto Raptors might have a hard time giving the Celtics a run for their money. Although Toronto can score as well as anyone in the league, it appears to be questionable whether their defense will get enough stops to stay within striking distance of Boston.
