Even though it looked like Dallas was going to clinch their fourth straight victory, the Mavs failed to deliver when the clock was winding down in the fourth quarter versus the New Orleans Hornets. More specifically, coach Rick Carlisle’s squad was up 97-94 with nine seconds remaining in regulation, but somehow managed to miss three free throws in a row. Subsequently, the Hornets evened the game with a clutch three pointer and steamrolled the Mavs in overtime after Dirk Nowitzki fouled out. Therefore, the team around Jason Kidd will have to do its best to leave said game behind them and focus on their upcoming encounter with the Toronto Raptors.

In contrast, Toronto was able to secure an important win at home versus the Detroit Pistons before entering a tough west coast road trip. More specifically, the Raptors will face the Hornets, Mavericks, Spurs, Jazz, Nuggets and Suns over the next two weeks and will most likely have a tough time staying above the .500 mark. So far, Jay Triano’s team experienced some ups and downs but definitely showed some progress compared to their unsatisfying 2008-09 campaign. Although Chris Bosh and company had no problem scoring, their interior defense seemed weak at times and allowed too many breakdowns in the first week of play. In conclusion, the Mavericks will enter their encounter with Toronto as favorites to clinch a win at American Airlines Center, but should not underestimate the Raptors’ explosive offense. Especially star forward Dirk Nowitzki is bound to cause endless problems for Toronto’s defense since neither Andrea Bargnani nor Chris Bosh will be able to guard him. Although Hedo Turkoglu might be a viable option on the perimeter, Nowitzki will most likely be able to take him off the dribble on most occasions. Either way, the audience can look forward to an entertaining ball game between two teams that like to push the ball and score in transition.
