Entering this year's NBA campaign with a shorthanded team as Chris Andersen, Kenyon Martin and Nene Hilario are all sidelined by injuries, the team around All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony is about to face a tough challenge in the first weeks of play. Thus, the Denver Nuggets will host Al Jefferson and the Utah Jazz at Pepsi Center on Thursday at 1 a.m. GMT.

When the Jazz lost All-Star Carlos Boozer this summer, many experts around the league thought that the franchise would inevitably struggle to stay in the playoff mix of the competitive Western Conference in 2010-11. Yet, Utah did not only manage to fill the hole Boozer's departure left by acquiring Al Jefferson from the Minnesota Timberwolves, but also rallied to an impressive 8-0 record in the preseason. Likewise, Gordon Hayward and Raja Bell will provide the Jazz with two serviceable perimeter players and should be able to keep the squad of coach Jerry Sloan in the race for home-court advantage down the stretch. Therefore, Deron Williams and company are confident to stay on track when they play the Nuggets on the road on Thursday.

After an amazing start into the season, the Nuggets experienced some ups and downs in the past few weeks. Trying to get their act together, Carmello Anthony and the Denver Nuggets are hoping to bounce back versus the Utah Jazz at Pepsi Center on Monday at 2 a.m. GMT.

Even though the Jazz are not quite as successful as the franchise’s front-office was hoping before the season got underway, Deron Williams and company showed some progress over the past month and made it back to the playoff race. Holding on to a 21-17 record, Utah is just half a game behind the eight playoff seed and showed that they are able to compete with anyone in the league on a good night. Especially the 20-point blowout win versus the Dallas Mavericks raised some eyebrows and might be an indicator that the Utah Jazz could be even stronger once everyone gets used to their new rotation. Most importantly, starting point guard Deron Williams has been healthy so far and put up no less than 19.6 points, 9.7 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.1 steals per contest.

In contrast, the Nuggets got off to a phenomenal start but have been struggling as of late. Winning only five of their last ten, Carmello Anthony and company fell to 24-14 and lost some of the momentum they built earlier in the season. While Denver had no trouble on the offensive end of the floor, their defense left much to be desired. Allowing 102 points per game, George Karl’s squad might have to tighten up their defensive rotation in order to have a legitimate shot at another Conference Finals appearance. That said, All-Star forward Carmello Anthony has been on fire in the first three months of play, averaging 29.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.2 steals in 37 minutes a night. Considering the performance of both teams so far, the Jazz and Nuggets could find themselves on a level playing field on Monday night. Both teams have an excellent starting five and a fairly deep bench, yet neither franchise has excelled defensively in the first three months of action. Thus, getting stops and limiting mismatches, caused by Carmello Anthony and Deron Williams respectively, could be a decisive factor down the stretch.

Coming off one of the best years in franchise history, the Denver Nuggets are hoping to make even more noise in the Western Conference in 2009-10. The first task for Carmello Anthony and the Nuggets will be to make it past the Utah Jazz in their season opener on Thursday at 3:30 a.m. GMT.

In contrast, the Utah Jazz are not overly content with their performance in 2008-09. Although the Jazz made it to the playoffs, they did not manage to make it out of the first round. That said, losing to the eventual NBA champions from Los Angeles is nothing to be ashamed of, but an 8th place finish in the regular season was not satisfying for Deron Williams and company. Although Utah did not make any noticeable moves during the off-season, there was a lot of turmoil about the future of power forward Carlos Boozer. After publicly stating the he would opt out of his contract, the franchise was obviously planning without the All-Star forward and subsequently re-signed undersized backup forward Paul Millsap. However, Boozer changed his mind and plans on staying another year in Salt Lake City, possibly due to the lack of lucrative deals in the aftermath of the economic crisis. Either way, coach Jerry Sloan is looking at another year of having to find a rotation for the equally talented power forwards Carlos Boozer and Paul Millsap. Given the fact that the Jazz’ front office is well aware of said situation, it could also happen that Boozer is traded as soon as Utah receives a decent offer.

Unlike the Utah Jazz, the Denver Nuggets had very little to be upset about after making it to the Conference Finals in May. However, financial constraints and the luxury tax threshold prevented GM Mark Warkentienen from re-signing starting two-guard Dahntay Jones and backup forward Linas Kleiza. Considering that the Nuggets’ success was partially due to their deep bench things might be more difficult for Denver in this year’s NBA campaign. The departure of Dahntay Jones will force coach George Carl to move streaky guard J.R. Smith to the starting five while having very few impact players on the bench except for Chris Andersen.

Taking everything into considerations, the match-up between the Jazz and Nuggets should be a fairly even game that could go either way. Even though the Jazz have been terrible on the road last year, Deron Williams and Andrei Kirilenko are certainly capable of leading the team to a win versus other playoff teams. Where as the Nuggets will still be figuring out what rotation works for their new squad, Utah will field exactly the same team that played together in 2008-09. Crucial match-ups could be Chauncey Billups trying to contain Deron Williams and the Jazz struggling to find a way to defend Carmello Anthony.
