LeBron James receives MVP award
Being only 24 years old, he is one of the youngest players in NBA history to earn the MVP award. Only Karl Malone (24) and Wes Unseld (23) were able to win the prestigious MVP trophy earlier in their career. LeBron received 109 out of 121 votes and follows Kobe Bryant who claimed the award last season. Like most years, the MVP honors were awarded to the leading player of the team holding the best regular season record. In this year’s campaign, LeBron’s Cleveland Cavaliers clinched the number one playoff seed at 66-16 while posting an impressive 39-2 home record.
Even though James had averaged impressive numbers in previous years, this season was the first time that he was able to elevate his team to the level of a championship contender. He finished the regular season averaging 28.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 7.2 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. But even more importantly his defense showed significant improvement which along with the Cavaliers team defense allowed Cleveland to secure home court advantage throughout the postseason. Likewise, it should be noted that Cleveland’s success and King James’ leadership allowed LeBron to sit out the fourth quarter in various games. Thus he only had to play 37.6 minutes per game compared to his 40.4 minute career average which makes his terrific numbers even more amazing.
Having won Olympic gold and the MVP trophy, the only thing left to achieve appears to be a championship ring. Whether the Cleveland Cavaliers will be able to win it all this year remains to be seen, but right now things are certainly looking good for the team from Ohio.
