Raptors pondering rebuilding options

Jose CalderonAlbeit the Toronto Raptors had sky high hopes for the 2009-10 season, they eventually failed to make it to the post-season for the second consecutive time. Despite the acquisition of Hedo Turkoglu, Jarrett Jack, Amir Johnson, Sonny Weems, Marco Belinelli and Reggie Evans, the Raptors' struggled to post a winning record and ultimately finished the season 2 games below the .500 mark, missing the Eastern Conference playoffs by just one game.

Considering that franchise cornerstone Chris Bosh will become an unrestricted free agent by July 1st, GM Bryan Colangelo is certainly under significant pressure to work on a solution that would not lead to a complete franchise breakdown if CB4 decides to bolt. Last year, Bosh averaged 24.0 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists per contest. To make things even worse, Hedo Turkoglu apparently has little interest of staying with the team after a rather unsatisfying role for the 30-year old point-forward in last year's NBA campaign. According to sources close to Turkoglu's agent, a potential buy-out and Hedo going back to Europe is not beyond the realms of reality.

Apart from said issues, the Raptors will face the difficult task of improving their roster without any cap space available to become a major player in the 2010 free agency bonanza. Where as Amir Johnson and Sonny Weems played surprisingly well, Evans, Belinelli and Jack were unable to give the franchise a lift. Likewise, starting point guard Jose Calderon once again showed that he is unable to defend opposing guards and remained a permanent defensive liability. Therefore, GM Bryan Colangelo will most likely be exploring options that could net the Raps a solid starting point guard in exchange for a few of T.O.'s rotational players along with Jack or Calderon.
