Cavaliers targeting off-season moves
Firstly, the Cavaliers frontcourt seemed a bit weak when they had to match-up with Dwight Howard and the likes. Although Anderson Varejão is a solid contributor and Ben Wallace a valuable veteran they were not able to give Cleveland the productivity they were looking for. Thus, the primary target for the Cavs will most likely be picking up a big man that provides a low-post presence on both ends of the floor. More specifically, trading Ben Wallace’s expiring $14 million contract is a viable option since many teams are trying to cut their payroll due to the struggling economy. One possibility would be going after Shaquille O’Neal who might be available as the Phoenix Suns are hoping to get rid off some of their bigger contracts. Alternatively, the Hornets’ Tyson Chandler will most likely be up for grabs even though it is debatable to what extent he would offer an improvement over Ben Wallace.
On the other hand, key player Mo Williams disappeared in the Eastern Conference Finals which raises the question if another playmaker in the backcourt is necessary. Therefore, it seems to be possible that the Cavaliers might try to go after Jason Kidd who will become an unrestricted free agent this summer. This scenario would allow the Cavs to start Mo Williams at the shooting guard position while Kidd would do most of the ball handling. Although signing Jason Kidd is very tempting, one also has to consider that Cleveland is already exceeding the salary cap and it has to be seen how much money the franchise will be willing to spend.
