Detroit Pistons fire Michael Curry

Michael CurryComing off an unsatisfactory 2008-09 season, the Detroit Pistons are ready for a complete roster and staff overhaul during the off-season. With a disappointing 39-43 record the Pistons barely clinched the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference before being swept 4-0 in the first round of the playoffs by the Cavaliers. Considering that Detroit made it to the NBA Eastern Conference Finals six straight years since 2002, change appears to be inevitable in order to match the franchise’s goals.

Thus, the Pistons decided to fire head coach Michael Curry after just one season in Detroit. According to the Pistons’ front office, tensions between Curry and some players were the main reason as well as the need to head into a new direction basketball wise. However, others claim that Curry simply happened to be a suitable scapegoat for the failure which happened after veteran point guard Chauncey Billups was traded to Denver in exchange for Allen Iverson. Iverson never managed to accept his place in Detroit’s rotation and was sidelined for the last month of the season. Denver on the other hand went on to have their best year in franchise history after Billups took over point guard duties and helped the Nuggets to play better team defense. Therefore, it appears to be a possible scenario that GM Joe Dumars fired Curry to avoid taking the blame for the Pistons’ poor performance after a bad trade.

Even though a new coach has not been announced yet, Doug Collins supposedly is one of the more prominent candidates for the job. Likewise, the Pistons appear to be on their way to re-build fundamental parts of their roster through free agency this summer. More specifically, Detroit is one of the few teams with significant cap space and most likely will have plenty of options in this year’s free agent class. Due to the stagnant economy the Pistons might even be able to land a few steals if everything goes as planned.
