Gilbert Arenas suspended until further notice
Two weeks ago, Arenas caused plenty of turmoil when he not only brought firearms into Verizon Center, but pointed a gun at teammate Javaris Crittenton. According to sources close to the incident, Crittenton also drew a weapon when the two got into a heated debate about a card game related issue. Obviously, neither the Washington Wizards nor the NBA are willing to tolerate players bringing firearms into the workplace. On one hand, it is absolutely inacceptable from a moral point of view and counterproductive marketing wise. On the other hand, the NBA could very well face significant law suites if any damage emerges from such happenings. To make things even worse, Gilbert Arenas went on to joke about said incident and showed little regret in interviews with the media.
Given the fact that the NBA relies to a large extent on the positive image of their stars to maximize its marketing revenue, it is no surprise that commissioner David Stern suspended Arenas yesterday. Somewhat surprising however is that he was suspended indefinitely, apparently due to his lack of remorse and unprofessional conduct of the issue afterwards. While it might look like another setback for the struggling Washington Wizards, the suspension could actually benefit the franchise from D.C. in the long run. More precisely, Washington wanted to move Arenas earlier this season, but was unable to do so due to his costly $111 million contract. Given the fact that he is suspended without pay, the franchise could very well save a substantial amount of cash or even appeal for his contract to be voided.
