Grizzlies might trade 2 draft pick

Ricky RubioBefore the draft lottery was held nearly all experts agreed on Blake Griffin and Ricky Rubio clearly being pick number one and two respectively. Thus, after the lottery night everything pointed to Ricky Rubio heading to Memphis, but things became complicated. Rubio stated that he would not consider a buy-out from his current contract with Joventud Badalona if he had to play for the Memphis Grizzlies or the Oklahoma City Thunder who are holding the third round one pick.

There are several reasons why Ricky Rubio refuses to go to Memphis but the most important one is the current back-court of the Grizzlies. More specifically, the Grizzlies' management is planning on staying with point-guard Mike Conley and ball-hogging shooting guard O.J. Mayo. Thus, Rubio would not get past limited minutes in a mediocre team in a small market. Since Joventud Badalona demands a $8 million buy-out to let him go to the NBA the Spaniard is not comfortable with paying such a huge amount of money out of his own pocket unless it is for a brighter future on the basketball court.

Thus, the Memphis Grizzlies are expected to either trade the number two pick for a lower pick and a veteran or settle for a sign-and-trade deal on draft night. In fact, Ricky Rubio is not even scheduled for a work-out in Memphis prior to the draft at the end of June. One possibility may be a trade with either Sacramento or Washington who could both offer the starting point guard position to Rubio and the fourth or fifth draft pick plus other assets to the Grizzlies. However, many other possible trade scenarios are bound to emerge due to the high interest in Rubio around the NBA and this year's relatively week draft class.
