Iverson signs one year deal in Memphis

Allen IversonThroughout the 2008-09 campaign Allen Iverson experienced a tremendous amount of criticism due to his inability to adapt to his new role in Detroit. More specifically, Iverson was traded from Denver to Detroit in exchange for Chauncey Billups at the beginning of the season and subsequently caused a lot of problems for the Pistons.

Even though there is no doubt about the amazing skill-set of ‘A.I.’, he proved once again that he is not necessarily an unselfish player who makes his team better. Being expected to come off the bench and knock down shots Iverson quickly became disgruntled since he perceived himself as a go-to-guy in the Pistons’ first unit. Ultimately, Allen Iverson was banished from Detroit roster due to his inability to fit into the team.

During this year’s off-season there has been a lot of speculation around the NBA concerning the future of A.I. Despite the aforementioned issues he received a few offers and finally made his decision public last night. According to the Memphis Grizzlies front office, Allen Iverson signed a one-year deal worth $3.5 million with further financial incentives based on his performance. Even though many have their doubts about Iverson’s impact at the age of 34, it is not beyond the realms of reality that the Grizzlies could make it to the playoffs with A.I. on board. Throughout his career, Allen Iverson put up 27.1 points, 6.2 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.2 steals per contest in 886 regular season games.

Taking a look at the bigger picture, the Memphis Grizzlies will be heading into the 2009-10 season with a significantly improved roster. Earlier this summer the franchise from Tennessee picked up forward-center Zach Randolph for next to nothing as well as acquiring Hasheem Thabeet with their second overall draft pick. Thus, the Grizzlies will have a very capable starting five featuring Mike Conley, Allen Iverson, Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol. Moreover, O.J. Mayo and Hasheem Thabeet are excellent options off the bench and certainly among the better substitutes in the league. Considering that the Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets lost some of their key players the Grizzlies could be able to make a run for the 7th or 8th playoff spot in the Western Conference.
