Los Angeles Clippers missing out on first-tier free agents
However, unlike other teams with cap space who missed out on LeBron James and company, Los Angeles is not looking to overpay for second tier players but instead opted to take a different path. More specifically, the franchise decided to pick up a few rotation players who are capable of playing solid basketball in limited minutes without costing a fortune. Thus, GM Neil Olshey signed combo guard Randy Foye to a two-year deal worth about $8.5 million as well as acquiring power forward Brian Cook who will receive $2.4 million over the next two seasons. Moreover, Ryan Gomes will wear a Clippers uniform for the next three years and will be owed a total of $12 million over the length of his contract. In 2009-10, Gomes averaged 10.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 29 minutes a game for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Similarly, Randy Foye showed that he can be a solid contributor off the bench and put up 10.1 points, 3.3 assists and 1.9 rebounds per contest for the Washington Wizards. Unlike Foye and Gomes, Cook has hardly seen the floor over the past four years in Orlando and Houston. While said players may not push the franchise to the upper echelon of the Western Conference, the Clippers could very well field a competitive squad on opening night. Most importantly, last year's first overall pick Blake Griffin will finally make his NBA debut in October and could very well emerge as one of the best big men down the stretch.
