Michael Beasley replacing Jefferson in Minnesota

Michael BeasleyAfter a series of incidents involving drugs and questionable comments, the Miami Heat finally decided to move young power forward Michael Beasley who was the number two overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft. Moreover, it was no secret that the Heat were looking to build a championship supporting cast around Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade and LeBron James. Thus, Beasley's contract had to go somewhere else to make space for the cap room that was eventually used to sign Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem. After a few weeks of listening to offers around the league, GM Pat Riley finally agreed with the Minnesota Timberwolves on a trade that sends Michael Beasley to Minnesota in exchange for two future second round picks, in 2011 and 2014 respectively.

Even though GM David Kahn is frequently criticized by media around the globe for some of his decisions, it looks like the Wolves are coming off one of their better off-seasons and could be on track to rebuilding the team over the next two years. Obviously, Al Jefferson did not work out as franchise centerpiece and the team has yet to recover from losing Kevin Garnett three years ago. Either way, adding Michael Beasley appears to be a low-risk/high-reward move as he is still on a rookie contract and has shown that he could be a dominant player in the league if he matures and behaves appropriately off the court. Sure, that's a big 'if' but ultimately Beasley is just 21 years old and has yet to enter his prime. In 2009-10, the 6-10 power forward averaged 14.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 30 minutes per game for the Miami Heat. While there are many issues to be tackled for the T-Wolves as a franchise, acquiring Beasley for little more than two second rounders could turn out to be a great move down the stretch. Similarly, whether David Kahn decision to draft Ricky Rubio with the fifth overall pick last year was a good idea is still up in the air as the Spanish point guard will stay another year in Europe before going to the NBA next year. If Beasley blossoms and Rubio leads the Wolves back to the playoffs next year the franchise might have a bright future ahead of it, otherwise Minnesota will most likely start looking for a new General Manager after failing again to rebuild.
