Nash signs extension in Phoenix
Thus, after much deliberation Nash decided to sign a two-year extension worth approximately $22 million. Apparently, he was looking to opt out of his contract at first to play for a championship contender but changed his mind over the past few weeks. On one hand, Phoenix’ up-tempo basketball fits Steve Nash very well and led to an impressive stats-line of 17.1 points and 10.8 assists per contest in Arizona. On the other hand, his career is obviously nearing its end and due to the Suns’ financial problems it seems to be highly unlikely that Nash will obtain a championship ring. Throughout his career, the Canadian point guard averaged 14.4 points and 8.0 assists for the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns.
Although Suns’ GM Steve Kerr has pointed out that the franchise will not sacrifice key players for cap relief, it remains to be seen to what extent his statement will hold up. After all, Phoenix already traded Shaquille O’Neil to the Cleveland Cavaliers for practically nothing in return. Considering that the Suns already missed the post-season last year despite Shaq being the most consistent player down the stretch, it appears to be a tough challenge for the franchise to get back into the playoff race next season. One crucial factor for the Suns’ success will most likely be the health and shape of franchise cornerstone Amare Stoudemire. If the multiple NBA All-Star is ready to compete on both ends of the floor Phoenix could be a dangerous team to face in the open court.
