Oklahoma City Thunder filling roster holes

Pau GasolWithout any doubts, the Oklahoma City Thunder were one of the biggest surprises in last year's NBA campaign. After all, the team drastically improved from an unsatisfying 25-57 record in 2008-09 to a playoff appearance in 2009-10 with an impressive 50-32 record in the competitive Western Conference. After some excellent choices in recent drafts, the Thunder has been building a very competitive team around Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Jeff Green.

Thus, after three years of rebuilding the team from Oklahoma is at a point where they have a solid playoff team, a legitimate superstar in Kevin Durant and very few problems to deal with. In fact, the only thing missing in their hard-nosed battle with the Los Angeles Lakers in the first playoff round this year was a little bit more size up-front, as Pau Gasol caused a wide range of problems for the Thunder. Therefore, it is no surprise that Oklahoma was looking for another big man to strengthen their front-court this summer. Ultimately, GM Sam Presti decided to trade Quincy Pondexter and Craig Brackins who were selected with the 21st and 26th overall pick respectively for Cole Aldrich and Morris Peterson from the New Orleans Hornets. Aldrich is a 6-11 center and was drafted by the Hornets with their No 11 pick last month. In 2009-10, Aldrich averaged 11.3 points, 9.8 rebounds and 3.5 blocks in 27 minutes per contest for the University of Kansas. Likewise, Mo Peterson can be expected to provide some scoring off the bench when franchise cornerstone Kevin Durant needs a rest. Likewise, Oklahoma also picked up Royal Ivey who will most likely see very little playing time unless one of the Thunder's guards goes down with an injury. That said, Ivey has shown in the past that while he might not be much of an offensive threat, he is a very solid defender and has no problems accepting his role.
