Shaq might be on his way to Cleveland

Phoenix SunsDespite a phenomenal regular season and sweeping through the first two playoffs round, the Cleveland Cavaliers did not finish the post-season with the targeted championship when they were eliminated by the Magic in the Eastern Conference Finals. Considering franchise cornerstone LeBron James will become a free agent next year, the Cavaliers are expected to make some moves over the summer to make sure they will stay in the championship race next year. Otherwise, it seems highly unlikely that James would resign in 2010 instead of moving to a bigger market and a better team.

Therefore, Cleveland will most likely look to upgrade their rather weak frontcourt to obtain a more dominant low post presence. Just like at the trade deadline in February, discussions about Shaquille O’Neal possibly being traded to the Cavs are emerging. Such a deal would involve the expiring contract of Ben Wallace plus one other player to match the salary. Unlike in February, the Cavaliers are probably more willing to make the move now as they cannot rest on the best NBA record and championship dreams anymore. Although many people said Shaq would be at the end of his career prior to the season, he came out and proved all his critics wrong being the only consistent contributor for the struggling Suns. The Phoenix Suns have made it clear that they are looking to cut their payroll and save cap-space, thus trading Shaq would be a viable option. A very likely scenario appears to be that the Cavaliers might be looking around the league for other big men who offer better prospects for the future, but if they cannot find an adequate player they would most likely be looking to acquire Shaq.
