Tony Allen signs in Memphis
According to sources close to the Grizzlies front-office, guard-forward Tony Allen agreed to a three year deal worth approximately $9 million. After spending his entire six years in the league with the Boston Celtics, Allen is hoping to see an increase in playing time in Memphis in the upcoming NBA campaign. Albeit the Celtics were interested in resigning the 6-4 swingman, GM Danny Ainge reportedly refused to offer more than a two-year deal which ultimately led to Allen deciding to leave. In 2009-10, Tony Allen averaged 6.1 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists in just 16 minutes per contest. Where as Allen is a hard-nosed defender and can drive to the hoop, he is a fairly weak shooter from beyond the arc. In fact, he did not even attempt a single three pointer last year which evidently is a considerable flaw for an undersized wing player.
While Allen looks like a budget replacement for Ronnie Brewer that could work out with a little bit of luck, the Grizz' inability to sign their first round draft picks Xavier Henry and Greivis Vasquez left many experts wondering what the franchise might be up to. After all, one hardly sees any standard rookie scale contract falling through for first round picks and much less for a lottery pick like Xavier Henry. As of now, it is hard to tell whether Memphis is looking for a trade or is simply hoping to save a few dollars down the stretch.
