Trailblazers with a lot of draft options

Kevin PritchardWithout any doubts, the Portland Trailblazers have been one of the most active teams around draft time over last few years. More specifically, General Manager Kevin Pritchard made a total of five trades last year which resulted in Portland acquiring 11th overall pick Jerryd Bayless as well as Nicolas Batum.

This year, the Trailblazers have five draft picks, one first round pick plus four second round pick. However, there are a couple of limitations Portland is facing this time. Firstly, they will most likely not be able to squeeze five new players into their team unless they are willing to part with some of their assets. Moreover, one of the issues with their current roster is the lack of veteran leadership. Although they have a lot of talent in their young team around Brandon Roy and Lamarcus Aldridge, a more experienced player in their locker room would be desirable for their next post-season appearance. Thus, it appears to be a viable option to trade some of their picks for a veteran that would match their needs. Since many teams will try to avoid paying luxury taxes due to the struggling economy, there should be numerous options available during the off-season.

Given the huge skill gap in this year’s draft class, trading some of their lower picks for a higher pick would only make sense if they could sign impact players like Blake Griffin or Ricky Rubio. Unfortunately for the Trailblazers such a trade will most likely not take place as they would have to give up too much to get one of the top three picks. Nonetheless, Portland will certainly be ready to make a move on draft day if the right opportunity appears.
