Wizards hoping for a better season next year

Gilbert ArenasWhile the 2008-2009 playoffs are still going on, most teams are already busy with planning their off-season moves and evaluating what happened last season. Without any doubts, the Washington Wizards are one of the teams who could compete for a ‘Most Disappointing Season’ award. In fact, the struggling Wizards had the worst regular season in franchise history with 19 wins and 63 losses. Considering that they made it to the playoffs as fifth seed the year before one can imagine how frustrated fans in D.C. have become recently.

Although many things went wrong, the most important factor certainly were the injuries of key players that went on throughout the season. Firstly, franchise player Gilbert Arenas was out for pretty much the whole regular season only playing in two games. His career average of 22.8 points, 5.5 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game illustrates how significant his loss turned out to be for the Wizards. Moreover, Caron Butler missed a ton of games as well which basically eliminated the two primary offensive options on every Wizards’ possession.

However, there is also a bright spot to the terrible season Washington had to go through. There is a good chance that the franchise from D.C. will end up with the first or second draft pick this year. Thus, the Wizards could very well end up with Ricky Rubio starting at the point guard or Blake Griffin at the power forward position next year. In case Rubio will be drafted that would most likely move the recovered Gilbert Arenas to the shooting guard position giving Washington an extremely speedy and efficient backcourt. If one adds the young Javal McGee who showed a lot of potential this season and veteran All-Star Antawn Jamison to the mix, the Wizards have a very decent starting five. Thus, taking everything into consideration it should be no surprise if Washington was competing for post-season home court advantage next year, provided their centerpieces manage to stay healthy.
