After a rather slow start at the 2010 FIBA World Championship, Canada is trying to get back on track in order to qualify for the elimination stage. Thus, Joel Anthony and the Canadian national team will take on New Zealand in Group D on Wednesday at 1 p.m. GMT.

Even though Canada is hardly a contender at the 2010 FIBA World Championship, it was still somewhat surprising to see the squad around Joel Anthony and Jermaine Anderson falling to Lebanon in their first group game. Especially the defense of coach Leo Rautins' squad left much to be desired and committed too many fouls down the stretch, resulting in no less than 32 free throws for Lebanon. Nonetheless, one should keep in mind that the Canadian team is competing without NBA All-Star guard Steve Nash and Samuel Dalembert from the Sacramento Kings. However, Canada will inevitably have to improve by leaps and bounds in order to have a real shot at making it to the elimination round.

Similarly, New Zealand will also have to provide a more consistent effort at the defensive end of the floor to make some noise in Turkey. Albeit the Kiwis had no trouble finding the basket in their 79-92 loss versus Lithuania on Saturday afternoon, their defense was unable to stop their opponent's dribble penetration. One positive surprise was the performance of Kirk Penney whose resume includes Euroleague play as well as a short NBA stint with the Miami Heat and Los Angeles Clippers. In the opening match Penney recorded an impressive stats line of 37 points and 3 assists. Considering the aforementioned circumstances, both teams might find themselves on a fairly level playing field on Wednesday afternoon.
